If the electric power steering on your Audi A3 has failed then you will most likely be advised to have it replaced with a very expensive new part which comes with a 12 month limited warranty. The part is only available from main dealers and will require coding at an additional cost. I have a recent intermittent fault with the power steering on my 2004 Audi A3. When the engine is turned off for a few seconds and turned on again, the power steering warning light comes on and stays on and the steering heavy . When left for a few hours and then re started the lights goes off immediately. Can you advise

I would recommend getting the vehicle into a garage to have the fault diagnosed but it must be whilst the warning light is on. If you have the diagnostics performed whilst the light is off, it may not produce any fault codes and they are necessary to confirm which part is causing the failure.
However, the electric power steering rack on this vehicle is an extremely common failing part and I suspect an intermittent fault at the rack which can eventually progress to a complete failure. This fault code, depending on the exact wording from the diagnostic read out, could be due to an incorrect coding / setting or a faulty power steering module which is built in as part of the electric steering rack. We have sent you an email with further information and pricing.

Hi i have a 53 plate audi a3 1.6 petrol and i have the red warning light come on and no power steering whilst driving. Then i turn off the engine and sometimes it goes so i can continue to drive but only when the car has warmed up. Quite scary driving it with no power steering though to be honest.
