BMW BRAKE PRESSURE TRANSDUCER FAULTYou might have heard about the common BMW Brake Pressure Sensor fault, which is a fault within the ABS Pumps’ ESP system or even, you may be experiencing this type of fault with your own unit. The Brake Pressure Sensor (ESP fault) is not restricted to just BMW’s, in fact we are seeing customers especially from the VAG group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat & Skoda) and also customers with Mazda’s and Ford cars.

If you own a BMW you will notice that you don’t actually have an ESP button or ESP light on your dash (instrument cluster), you’ll have a DSC or ACS light which will stay on. DSC stands for “Dynamic Stability Control” but retains the same functionality of ESP.

What is DSC & Why Do I Need It?
The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is an additional function to the commonly known ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) & TCS (Traction Control System). Many 2000+ BMW’s are fitted with the DSC system. ABS prevents the wheels locking up under harsh braking / emergency braking, TCS will prevent the wheels from spinning when accelerating hard. DSC is much more advanced and is constantly working, calculating every corner you take to ensure you’re safety. The DSC system will use accelerometer sensors around the vehicle, to detect when the vehicle is likely to loose traction whilst cornering or sudden turning to avoid a collision at speed. If there is excessive longitudal or lateral acceleration/deceleration it will be detected & by sudden steering at speed, the DSC system will instantly apply the brake to one of the opposing wheels, preventing excessive lateral movement that causes loss of traction to the road and loss of driver control of the vehicle.

How To Know If You Have The BMW ESP/DSC Fault “Brake Pressure Sensor”
If you have got this fault with your car then you’ll notice that the DSC / ACS light will stay on and pressing the DSC / ACS button will have no effect. Common to BMW’s you may also hear the double-tone alarm when you turn the ignition on, this is the on-board computer system advising you that there is a fault with the system.

When plugging a diagnostics machine or even a small code reader that will read ABS fault codes, you will see the fault code & description as follows:

“5E20 – HYDRAULIC PRESSURE SENSOR INTERNAL”

This is referring to the Brake Pressure Sensor inside the ABS pump and unfortunately cannot be purchased as a separate part, you are required to purchase a complete new unit direct from BMW at a cost of £1700.00+ (+vat, programming & labour). We can supply these units at a fraction of the cost and guarantee NO Programming will be required.. that’s right – PLUG & PLAY!

BMW Brake Pressure Transducer ABS Pump FailureWhy You Should Choose Sinspeed To Replace / Remanufacture Your ABS unit
The ABS pump will have failed due to a manufacturing defect and replacing it with a new unit or even a second hand one does not necessarily prevent this from happening again. In fact, if you was to replace it with a working second hand unit, then you will be waiting for the day for it to fail because they are all failing at one point or another. The problem is with the Internal Brake Pressure Sender Sensor Switch. Once this fails, the DSC system is no longer working. There are other companies that will simply replace this part and return it to you, but that will not prevent it from happening again in the future.

Quiet recently some dealers have brought out “Repair Kits” for this fault but again, it’s simply to repair the existing part by replacing the sensor with a like-for-like part.. it is in no way superseded and will carry the same design fault.

What we do is completely different. We bypass the original Brake Pressure Sensor Switch and fit our very own custom manufactured External Brake Pressure Sender Switch and calibrate it so that the manufacturing defect is no longer existing. This is the only way to completely remove all risks of the unit failing again and this is why we are confident enough to offer a full LIFETIME warranty on the unit.

Why Modify The Unit? – Why Not Just Replace The Damaged Part?
All other cars without the MK60 ATE ABS Control Module have the Brake Pressure Sensor fitted externally to the ABS Pump and guess what, they never fail!

Having the Brake Pressure Sender Sensor Switch fitted internally to the ABS Pump is a new space-saving idea which has gone terribly wrong and unfortunately dealerships are yet to recover from this outbreak of faulty units as they have not yet released a modification. Replacing the internal switch for another one will not permanently cure the problem as it will remain a manufacturing defective unit. In order to safe-guard the future of your ABS unit, you have to modify it to match it’s predecessors. All the older versions of the ABS units come without internal brake pressure switches and the DSC never failed because the switches were mounted externally. If something isn’t broken.. why try to fix it? The external switches were great and never failed, the internal brake pressure switch was a bad idea from the start.

SAFETY WARNING!!
There have been rumours of people and/or companies trying to repair these units and in some cases imitate our work. Please understand that although the DSC system is not absolutely crucial, modifying the ABS controller/pump in any way (without superior extensive knowledge) in the technology of advanced braking systems and electronic control modules, you will be risking the life of others. Please do not attempt to repair these units yourself and please do not offer such services to trade or the general public. We have been in business since 1972 as a group company and all our parts, services are fully tested before leaving the workshop. All units are thoroughly tested on specific specialist equipment to ensure maximum quality. Our DSC Fault Modifications come fully approved and as far as we’re aware, there is no other company out there that can successfully repair these units and completely remove the defective state.

If you’ve got a car with a Brake Pressure Sensor fault relating to the ABS unit or have the DSC light lit up on your dash, then call us today and we’ll give you an instant quote. The number to call is 0871 2887 666.

Common ABS Pump (ESP Fault) – Brake Pressure Sender / Sensor Switch Failure – On Ford / Mazda & Volvo

C1288 Brake Pressure Sensor/Transducer Fault Ford Mazda Volvo ABS Pump

We did an article some time ago with reference to the Common ABS (ESP – Brake Pressure Sensor Faults) For Volkswagen, Audi, Seat & Skoda and were overwhelmed with the interest we’ve had. In fact, our records show that particular article alone is receiving on average 1.5Million hits a month.

It’s interesting to see that the same part is used in other makes of vehicle and in this case, we’re referencing to the Ford, Mazda & Volvo range. They have the same MK60 ATE / Teves ABS Pumps fitted with slightly different brake pressure sensors (so not interchangeable with any of the VAG range).

What Are The Common Symptoms?
The common symptom around this fault is having the ESP light permanently illuminated on your dashboard speedo (instrument cluster) and pressing the “ESP OFF” / “DCS”  traction control button will have no effect – in some cases, the button will also be illuminated but again, pressing this button will have no effect.

What Is ESP & Why Do I Need It?
The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is an additional function to the commonly known ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) & TCS (Traction Control System). Most Ford’s, Mazda’s & Volvo’s from 2000+ are fitted with the ESP/TCS system. The ABS system alone prevents the wheels from locking up under harsh braking / emergency braking and the TCS will prevent the wheels from spinning when accelerating hard. ESP is much more advanced and is constantly working, calculating every corner you take to ensure you’re safety. The ESP system will use accelerometer sensors around the vehicle, to detect when the vehicle is likely to loose traction whilst cornering or sudden turning to avoid a collision at speed. If there is excessive longitudal or lateral acceleration/deceleration it will be detected & by sudden steering at speed, the ESP system will instantly apply the brake to one of the opposing wheels, preventing excessive lateral movement that causes loss of traction to the road and loss of driver control of the vehicle.

Why Is This Such A Common Failure?
These MK60 ATE / Teves ABS Pumps fail due to a manufacturing defect with the internal brake pressure sensors. They have no way of ventilation and the internal sealed unit will over pressurise and over time the internal sensor damages itself. Unfortunately, unlike the previous models where the brake pressure sensors were fitted externally and if failed, could be replaced quickly & at an affordable rate – these newer MK60 ATE / Teves units have the brake pressure sensors mounted internally within a sealed unit and so if failed, you cannot purchase the brake pressure sensors separately, which means you have no option but to replace or repair the unit.

A new unit can cost anything in the region of £1000-£1500 (+Vat) and that’s not including labour. The main issue here other than being extremely expensive is the fact you are replacing the unit for a like-for-like part which would basically mean the replacement unit will also carry the same design fault – thus not giving you peace of mind. A new unit will come with 1-2 years warranty but labour is never warranted and if it does fail within that period, you will be obliged to pay the labour rate again.

Luckily for you, we have the best solution to this problem and can remanufacture these units to meet & exceed the OEM standard using only the highest of quality parts to ensure it never fails again whilst maintaining full functionality of the ABS/ESP system. With our solution, we can offer a lifetime warranty giving you as the customer, complete peace of mind.

C1288 Brake Pressure Sensor / Transducer FaultsWhy You Should Choose Sinspeed To Replace / Remanufacture Your ABS unit
The ABS pump will have failed due to the common manufacturing defect and replacing it with a new or used unit will not solve this problem as you will receive a limited warranty (used parts – 30/90 days) and you would be waiting for the day it fails. There are other companies offering to repair these units but are only changing the internal brake pressure sensors for similar like-for-like parts, so as you can imagine this does not entirely resolve the issues and the weaknesses of the pump will still remain.

Mercedes Sensotronic brake-by-wire SBC ABS Pump System Failures

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

Contact Us

Mercedes Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) ABS PumpSensotronic Brake Control (SBC) ABS pump systems are commonly found on higher end Mercedes such as the E-Class, SL & CL Class, CLS etc.. the SBC Sensotronic ABS pump is a brake-by-wire system and Mercedes Benz were one of the first vehicle manufacturing companies to apply this system to cars.

How It Works
The Brake-By-Wire Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system is quite different to the conventional hydraulic abs braking system because it doesn’t have a brake servo at the reservoir to start with and the brake pedal is connected to the ECU by wire. The sensors on the brake pedal offer a way of communication, telling the on-board computer how the brake pedal was pressed, how hard it was pressed & how quickly it was pressed etc. The computer then calculates the required pressure and activates the braking system producing braking force at each wheel via modulators.

The problem with Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) ABS Pump Braking Systems
The Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) ABS Pump has a service life (also known as a life expectancy) programmed into the control module which works off the number of brake actuations. Once this limit has been reached, the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) light may illuminate on the dash or a brake related warning may appear on the trip computer. Once this happens, the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) system is de-activated and the hydraulic braking function mode is activated whereby limited braking pressure is applied to the front brakes thus increasing the braking distance.

When the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) ABS pump fails, you are led to believe that the unit will require replacing and in some cases (depending on the vehicle application) it can cost up to £2500-3000 for a replacement unit (+Labour, Programming & VAT).

Connected to the STAR diagnostic system, the fault code C2498 will show the fault code description “Service Threshold Reached” as a current & stored fault code. This code cannot be erased without replacing the system.

How Can Sinspeed Help Reduce This Cost & Fix The Problem?
Rather than replacing the unit with an expensive new part or even replacing with a second hand part (just waiting for it to fail).. we can remanufacture your existing unit and reprogram the Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) control module to increase the service life expectancy of the unit. This is becoming a very common problem and we’re able to carry out full repairs to these units and offer a very competitive fitting rate.

Volkswagen (VW) Touran Common ABS (ESP) Fault – Brake Pressure Sender / Sensor Switch Failure

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Contact UsExchange Units Kept In StockThe Volkswagen (VW) Touran has many common failures and unfortunately they’re not quick easy fixes either. The most common failures that we are seeing on a weekly basis are:

  • ABS Pump (ESP – Brake Pressure Sensor Fault)
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF Blocked)

For DPF faults the best solution is to have the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) completely removed. For more information on this, check out our dedicated DPF Removals article.

The ABS Pump fitted to later models of the Volkswagen (VW) Touran is a MK60 ATE (Teves) pump. They are mounted in the engine bay (nearside, behind the battery tray & against the suspension turret). The problem with these MK60 ATE (Teves) pumps is that ATE decided that for space-saving, it would be a good idea to have the conventional brake pressure sensor fitted internally, which is normally mounted externally to the pump closer to the brake servo. It is very rare for a brake pressure sensor to fail on conventional systems, however, these new MK60 ATE pumps are failing rapidly and we’re currently seeing 10 or so units coming in for repairs & modifications on a daily basis.

Common Symptoms Of ESP (Brake Pressure Sensor) Faults

Below you’ll see a list of the most common symptoms which suggest you have the ESP fault relating to a failure of the Brake Pressure Sensor / Sender Switch. You may have all the symptoms or even just one.

  • ESP light on dash
  • Traction light on dash
  • ABS light on dash
  • ESP button illuminated & won’t go out
  • Fault Codes: G201 and/or 01435

What Do We Do?

Unlike other companies who will simply repair the pump using a like-for-like brake pressure sensor and simply replace the damaged parts. We carry out a full test on the unit and during the repairs, we modify these pumps to meet & exceed the OE specification and ensure that the manufacturing defective part is eradicated from the current pump design. Functionality will remain the same and no modifications will be required during fitting.

No, as far as we are aware we are the only company in the whole of Europe that offer this specialist modification. There have been rumours of people and/or companies trying to repair these units and in some cases imitate our work. Please understand that although the ESP system is not absolutely crucial, modifying the ABS controller/pump in any way (without superior extensive knowledge) in the technology of advanced braking systems and electronic control modules, you will be risking the life of others. Please do not attempt to repair these units yourself and please do not offer such services to trade or the general public. We have been in business since 1972 as a group company and all our parts, services are fully tested before leaving the workshop. To see if we’ve got the part matching your vehicle, give us a call on 0871 2887 666 or email us with the part number from your ABS pump. The part number you’re looking for will be located on a sticker on the pump and it will start with 1KO for example: 1KO614517M (The M may be either 1 or 2 letters and can vary). We need that part number from your unit to verify if we’ve got one in stock. If we haven’t, then we can always work on your own unit and carry out the repairs & modifications on your unit.

The most common part numbers found on the Volkswagen (VW) Touran MK60 ATE (Teves) ABS Pumps are:

  • 1KO614517AA
  • 1KO614517AB
  • 1KO614517AC
  • 1KO614517AE
  • 1KO614517AF
  • 1KO614517B
  • 1KO614517H
  • 1KO614517M
  • 1KO614517T

Can I Fit The ABS Pump Myself?

Although it’s not the hardest of jobs, we do advise that you have a professional & qualified mechanic fit the ABS pump. After all, it is directly associated with the braking system and so it is for your own and others safety that the ABS pump is fitted correctly to ensure the braking system works correctly as it should. After re-fitting this part, you will need to bleed all four brake callipers and the ABS pump will also require bleeding. We do offer a very competitive fitting service and can guarantee to beat all quotes (with programming & recalibration inclusive). For an instant quote, call us on 0871 2887 666.

Fixing Common ESP Faults On Volkswagen (VW) TouranWill I Need To Have It Re-Programmed?

Yes, 9/10 times the ABS pump will need reprogramming and have all associated sensors (wheel speed sensor, steering angle sensor, brake pressure sensor & lateral acceleration sensor etc) will all need to be recalibrated. This can be done using a VAGCOM diagnostics system. Not all mechanics have access to this and so they may need to call a 3rd party auto-electrician in to do this, we do offer full step-by-step instructions for the programming & recalibration of the unit.

UPDATE - Our latest on the shelf units will NOT require programming and are fully self-calibrating!

VW, Seat, Skoda and Audi Brake Pressure Sensor Switch ABS Fault

The Famous Brake Pressure Sensor ABS Fault
The ABS Pump control module is a very common fault for owners of VW’s, Audi’s, Skoda’s, Seats & Mazda’s all with the ESP system. The fault is detected by having the ESP light illuminated on the Dashboard Speedo and also the “ESP OFF” switch will be illuminated too. Pressing the “ESP OFF” switch will have no effect. If you’ve had this problem, you would have most likely taken the vehicle to your local garage where they’d plug it onto a diagnostics machine and find the following common fault code: “01435 Brake Pressure Sensor 1 (G201)” or it would have given you the following fault description: “Brake Pressure Sensor” or “Brake Pressure Sender”.

If you had your vehicle in with the main dealers then you would have been told that you need to replace the ABS Pump Control Module. In fact, almost any garage you go to will tell you the same thing. A replacement ABS unit for your vehicle would be in the regions of £1000 – £1500 (+Vat) and that’s not including Labour. Luckily for you, we can repair these units for a fraction of the cost and could potentially save you a lot of money. What’s more, we now offer a full LIFETIME warranty on the replacement / remanufactured parts giving you complete peace of mind.
