The Audi A3 from 2003 onwards is fitted from factory with an Electric Power Steering Rack (EPS) and not surprisingly this is a very common failing part and extremely expensive if wanting to purchase a brand new replacement from a local dealer.

Common Audi A3 Electric Power Steering (EPS) Problems
There are various ways in which the Audi A3 EPS system can fail and below are some of the common faults we’ve seen recently with this type of unit, all of which we have been able to successfully repair.

  • Intermittent Loss of Power Steering
  • Complete Loss of Power Steering

If the electric power steering on your Audi A3 has failed then you will most likely be advised to have it replaced with a very expensive new part which comes with a 12 month limited warranty. The part is only available from main dealers and will require coding at an additional cost. The initial purchasing cost of a second-hand used part is relatively cheaper but this will also require programming at an additional cost and with the units being such common failures, you could end up back where you started with steering faults all over again.     Hi, Ive got a 2004 a3 3.2vr6 the steering rack failed and went extremely light i bought a second hand unit and have fitted it all working fine till recently developing a kocking sound when turning . ive removed the track rod ends and by moving the steering wheel left to right it knocks fairly heavy, Can i have a price to refurbish both units, Thanks

    Hi, my a3 Steering will sometimes work when cold but When I switch off then start up again it stops working, I hooked it up to a snap-on but it wouldnt even register a code as it didnt register.

    we have an Audi a3 2004 53 reg steering light on , no steering assistance , won’t reset if driven in a straight line above 20 kmh. unable to comunicate with steering control . also the gatway has a fault code for no coms with steering . what do you think. I think rack .

The parts number is either 1K1423055M or 1K1423055F (am not sure which is correct, steering wheel is on the left side).     hello i have a fault with my steering once u drive for about half an hour it becomes heavy and not nice to drive . if you stop and turn the steering lock to lock it becomes very light again .have had it vag tested no fault codes no lights could it be the pcm instead of rack or elec motor could you email me with a price list please

    My Audi A3 2.0 TFSI 2007 sportback (RHD) steering rack is not working/loss power & i believe i need to change them. My steering part number is: motor 1K2 909 144 L & rack 1K2 423 051 BA.
    Any suggestions to get my EPS back to normal are welcome.

    Hi i have a 53 plate audi a3 1.6 petrol and i have the red warning light come on and no power steering whilst driving. Then i turn off the engine and sometimes it goes so i can continue to drive but only when the car has warmed up. Quite scary driving it with no power steering though to be honest.     Hi, i have a 2.0 FSI Sport on 53 plate, exactly same symptoms, dropped at garage this morning and nothing from diagnostics so far… no power steering and warning light on dash, happened after short journey and returning to Vehicle… first time this morning?

    I have a recent intermittent fault with the power steering on my 2004 Audi A3. When the engine is turned off for a few seconds and turned on again, the power steering warning light comes on and stays on and the steering heavy . When left for a few hours and then re started the lights goes off immediately. Can you advise
