Nissan ABS Pump Faults, Testing & Module Repair

Summary: A Nissan ABS pump that keeps running after the ignition is off will flatten the battery, and it gets chased as a parasitic drain rather than a brake fault. The motor is rarely the problem — the control module bolted to it is.

You hear a hum from the engine bay after the key is out. By morning the car will not start. A new battery goes on, and a fortnight later it is flat again — the drain was never the battery, it was the ABS pump. This page sits inside our ABS pump and module repair work.

When a flat battery turns out to be a brake fault

An ABS pump motor should run only during an anti-lock event — a fraction of a second while the system cycles brake pressure to stop a wheel locking. Outside that, silence. When it runs on with the key out, the motor itself is usually healthy: the control module sitting on the hydraulic block is giving it a run command nobody withdraws.

  • A hum or whirr that carries on after the key is out. That is what separates this from an ordinary flat battery.
  • The ABS lamp lit, usually with traction and ESP alongside.
  • A battery that dies overnight, jumps fine, then dies again.
  • A scan tool that cannot reach the module. A unit driving the motor continuously may not have enough left to answer.

Do not leave it running: without fluid moving through the block to cool it the motor can overheat, and a burnt-out motor turns a module repair into a bigger job. Resetting the ABS light will not stop it.

Which ABS unit is on your Nissan?

Nissan has not used one ABS unit across the range, and the unit rather than the badge decides the repair. Where the pump motor takes its power changed between generations, and that decides whether anything outside the module can be at fault.

A fourth generation, the Bosch 9.0 / MK100, is also fitted to Nissans and develops the same running-on fault, though it has no page here. Nissan’s light commercials we would want a part number for rather than assume.

Read the labels rather than guess from the model year. Nissan’s own number for the actuator normally begins 47660; the unit carries a Bosch or ATE number of its own. Send both and we will confirm what you have.

Qashqai and Qashqai+2 have their own page

From 2007 both carry the Bosch 8.0 unit, and it is the one Nissan here with a page of its own — the symptoms owners report, the failure pattern and the part numbers we have seen. If that is your car, start there: Nissan Qashqai Bosch ABS / ESP pump and module repairs.

Ruling out the simpler faults first

The module is the end of the diagnostic chain, not the start. On an external-feed unit test the relay first, then fuses, wiring and earths — a poor earth at the module connector makes it behave erratically. Then the wheel-speed inputs, because a sensor sending a false lock-up signal has the module running the pump exactly as designed. Check the reluctor ring before condemning the sensor: a damaged ring will ruin a new sensor’s signal immediately.

No communication with the ABS module does not prove the unit is dead — one driving the motor continuously may be drawing too much current to answer. The codes other modules store are often the more useful read; the full order of work is in our constantly-running ABS pump guide.

What happens to the unit on the bench

Send the complete assembly unless we have asked otherwise — hydraulic block and control module together. The car stays where it is.

The failure is reproduced before anything is opened, on in-house Hardware-in-the-Loop platforms that load the unit with simulated heat and vibration rather than testing it cold. The component that gave way is then repaired at circuit level, with the MK70’s built-in pressure sensor reinforced rather than put back to standard.

Your own unit comes back still carrying your Nissan’s configuration, so in most cases it refits without coding. Taking it off opens the brake hydraulics, so have the brakes bled properly afterwards.

Before you post a Nissan ABS unit

My battery keeps going flat and nobody can find the drain. Could it be the ABS?

With the ignition off, listen at the front of the car. A continuous hum means the pump motor is still being driven, and it draws enough current to flatten a healthy battery in hours.

Can I isolate the ABS to stop it draining the battery?

It stops the pump and protects the motor while a repair is arranged, but it disables anti-lock braking completely — you keep ordinary brakes and lose the system that stops a wheel locking. Use it to reach a garage, not to keep driving.

Do I send the whole unit or just the module?

Send it complete, control module still on the hydraulic block, unless we have asked otherwise. Splitting the two properly is a bench job, and a poor reseal leaves a leak path in a brake circuit.

My Nissan is not one of the models named here.

Send the part numbers anyway. What is listed here is what we see most across the range, not the limit of what we work on — the number tells us more than the model and year.

Fit a battery and the pump is still running

Tell us the model, the build year, what the car is doing and any codes a garage has read. Not certain the ABS unit is at fault? Describe the symptoms first.
