Nissan DPF FAQs

Is the law on DPF removal different for a Navara than a Qashqai?

The offence is the same; only the maximum fine changes. Driving either on a public road without its filter breaches the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, and a missing DPF has meant an automatic MOT fail from February 2014. The fine can reach £1,000 for a car such as the Qashqai, or £2,500 where a Navara is registered as a light goods vehicle. That is why we take on Nissan removals for off-road and motorsport vehicles only.

Why do the Navara and Qashqai struggle to clear their DPFs?

Both carry the filter a long way from the engine. On the Navara 2.5 dCi, gas that leaves the engine and turbo above 800°C can be down to around 400°C by the time it reaches the filter, too cool to burn the soot off fully. The Qashqai 2.0 dCi mounts its filter further back as well, so the same shortfall shows up on shorter runs. Our Navara and Qashqai articles take each vehicle in turn.

Should the oil be changed after a forced regeneration on a Qashqai?

It is sensible. A forced regeneration raises the exhaust temperature by putting extra fuel through the engine, and some of that fuel can end up diluting the oil, so an oil and filter change afterwards protects the engine. If the DPF light comes back after one forced regeneration has already been done, another is unlikely to hold: the filter needs a professional clean and the underlying cause needs finding.

What can a blocked DPF damage on a Navara?

More than the filter. Back-pressure builds all the way to the turbocharger and can blow an oil seal before there is any obvious loss of power. The sensors in the exhaust suffer too: the exhaust gas temperature sensors, the lambda sensor and the DPF differential pressure sensor can all be damaged, and the EGR valve clogs. If the warning will not stay off, send the details through our repair form and we will advise on the next step.
