Kia DPF FAQs

Can a Kia be driven on UK roads without its DPF?

No. Road use without the filter breaches the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, the MOT has treated a missing DPF as an automatic fail from February 2014, and the fine can reach £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle. Any Kia removal we carry out is for an off-road or motorsport vehicle.

How do I know if my Kia’s DPF is blocked?

The DPF or engine management light usually comes first, often with a loss of power and a car that feels flat when pulling away. As the blockage builds, fuel consumption rises, the engine can be hard to start or cut out after starting, and limp mode may stop it revving beyond about 3,000 rpm. Our DPF fault codes guide lists the codes that tend to come with them.

Will a forced regeneration clear my Kia’s DPF?

It can burn off soot, which is what a regeneration is for. It cannot touch ash, which builds up over the filter’s life and never burns, and it will not correct a pressure sensor that is misreading. If the warning returns soon after, the filter needs a professional clean and the cause needs finding.

Can a Kia DPF be cleaned rather than replaced?

In most cases, yes, and on a road-going Kia it is the legal repair. Cleaning clears the ash a regeneration leaves behind; a new filter is only needed if the core is physically damaged or the filter stays restricted once cleaned. Our guide to how a DPF works explains the difference.
