Renault DPF FAQs

Is a Renault without its DPF road-legal in the UK?

No. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations make it an offence to use a Renault on a public road without its filter, the MOT has failed any Renault missing one from February 2014, and fines run to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle such as a Renault van. Renault removals are carried out here for off-road and motorsport vehicles only.

What does the DPF actually do on a Renault diesel?

It catches the soot in the exhaust gas inside a honeycomb core and burns it off at high temperature during regeneration. What remains is a fine ash that no regeneration can burn, and it gathers over the filter’s life until the core is restricted. That ash is why a filter at that stage needs a professional clean rather than another regeneration, and cleaning keeps the car road-legal. Our guide to how a DPF works goes further.

Why have more warning lights come on after my Renault’s DPF light?

Because the blockage has moved on a stage. A DPF light that appears and then clears means the filter was part-full and managed to regenerate. If the driving stays short and stop-start, the light stays on, the engine management light joins it and the glow plug light can begin to flash as the car drops into limp mode. By then a run at speed will not clear it, and the car needs diagnosing.

What gets checked before a Renault DPF is blamed?

The readings that would condemn it. The ECU judges the filter through its differential pressure sensor, so a sensor fault, logged as P2452 or P2453, is ruled out first, along with the full set of stored codes and the way the car has been driven. The Renault codes in our fault code list show which ones point where. Send your Renault’s details and codes through our repair form and we will come back with the likely route.
