Ford DPF Faults, Cleaning and Off-Road Removal
Summary: A blocked Ford DPF is usually the victim, not the cause. Most Ford cases we see trace back to injector faults sending the exhaust more soot than any regeneration can clear, so the road-legal fix is to repair what is upstream and then clean the original filter.
Earlier Ford diesels share Peugeot’s filter design, additive tank included; some later ones do without it. The rest of the range sits under our DPF removals category.
What goes wrong with a Ford DPF?
A worn or leaking injector delivers fuel the engine cannot burn cleanly, so soot builds faster than regeneration can clear it, and short trips cut those burns off early.
- Injector faults — the root cause we find most often on Fords.
- Additive tank faults on the earlier engines that share Peugeot’s design, which load the filter fast when dosing stops.
- Pressure sensor faults, where the differential pressure sensor or its pipes report a blockage that is not there.
Ignore the DPF light and the engine management light and limp mode follow.
Which Ford diesels are involved?
The 2.0 TDCi in the Galaxy, Kuga, Mondeo and S-Max has a session page of its own; its engine ECU is one of the harder units to program correctly. Many of Ford’s smaller TDCi engines, and Transit vans, carry filters too.
Repair the cause, then clean the filter
Cleaning a Ford filter while a faulty injector keeps feeding it only buys time. The lasting sequence is diagnosis, the injector or sensor repair it points to, then a professional clean of the original filter, refitted by your garage, which keeps the car legal to drive. Our DPF cleaning service handles that last step.
Removing a Ford DPF: where the law stands
A Ford used on a public road without its filter is in breach of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations. The MOT has failed a missing DPF from February 2014, and fines can reach £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a Transit or any other light goods vehicle.
Off-road and motorsport onlyFord DPF removal is carried out for track, competition and off-road vehicles, never for a Ford that is driven on the road.

We have corrected the software on 2.0 TDCi Mondeos after another company’s removal left the post-injection maps active and the engine regenerating non-stop, straining the injectors and washing fuel down the cylinder walls.
Ford DPF FAQs
Can you legally remove the DPF from a Ford in the UK?
Using the Ford on a public road afterwards is the offence, not the removal. It breaches the Construction and Use Regulations, fails the MOT and can bring a fine of up to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a van. We remove Ford filters for off-road and motorsport use only.
Is it safe to drive a Ford with the DPF light on?
A DPF light that goes out once the car has had a longer run has done its job. If it stays lit or limp mode follows, more miles will not fix it, and on a Ford the cause is often an injector adding soot with every one.
Would removing the DPF fix my Ford for good?
On the road, removal is not an option, and it would leave a faulty injector in place anyway. For an off-road or competition Ford, it works when the ECU is edited by hand; the 2.0 TDCi punishes automated software.
When does a Ford DPF need replacing rather than cleaning?
When the core is cracked or melted, or back-pressure stays high after a proper clean. Have the pressure sensor proved first; a false reading makes a good filter look like scrap.
