Range Rover DPF FAQs

Where can a Range Rover without a DPF legally be driven?

Only off the public road. On it, a Range Rover with the filter removed breaches the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, fails its MOT automatically under the rule that took effect in February 2014, and exposes the driver to a fine of up to £1,000, or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle. We take on Range Rover removals for off-road and motorsport vehicles only.

What do P2002 and P2003 mean on a Range Rover?

Both are raised by the DPF system. P2002 is a general particulate filter malfunction; P2003 says the filter’s trapping efficiency has fallen below threshold, meaning the ECU no longer believes it is catching soot as it should. Neither names a cause on its own, so they are read alongside any pressure sensor codes before the filter is judged. Our DPF fault code list includes the Land Rover entries.

How does a Range Rover’s DPF clean itself?

In two ways. Passive regeneration happens on its own when a long, fast run keeps the exhaust hot enough to burn the soot. Active regeneration is the ECU stepping in once the soot load reaches a set limit, adjusting fuel injection to lift the exhaust temperature. Stop-start traffic can end an active burn before it finishes, and repeated interruptions are how the DPF light ends up on. Our DPF explainer covers both in more detail.

Is a pattern DPF a good replacement on a Range Rover?

We would not recommend one. Owners who fit copy filters tend to come back with the same fault, because a pattern part is not made to the original standard, and a new filter of any kind leaves the original cause in place. Most filters that raise a warning can be professionally cleaned, which keeps a road-going Range Rover legal. If you are unsure which applies, send the details through our repair form.
