Where does UK law leave a Volvo with its DPF removed?

Off the public road. The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations prohibit using a Volvo there without its filter, from February 2014 the MOT has failed any Volvo built with a DPF that no longer carries one, and fines go up to £1,000 for a car and £2,500 for a light goods vehicle. We carry out Volvo DPF removals for off-road and motorsport vehicles only.

What does “Soot filter full – See manual” mean on a Volvo D5?

It is the car reporting that the filter is loaded and needs to regenerate. On the XC70 2.4 D5, if the filter cannot clean itself the message moves on to “Engine System Service Required”, and the engine ECU cuts power and puts the car into limp mode, taking away much of its pull and its kick-down. Can a blocked DPF sap a Volvo’s power with no warning on the dash?

Yes. We have seen Volvo D5s with no warning message and no lights showing that were still badly short of power. In those cars the filter was completely blocked and the engine was choking on exhaust back-pressure, which is a different thing from limp mode. Left long enough, that back-pressure can stop the engine starting at all, so a D5 that feels flat is worth checking even when the dash is clear.

Why does my Volvo D5 keep trying to regenerate its DPF?

Usually because the regenerations are not finishing. The D5 is built to clear its filter on longer, faster runs, and city driving loads it quickly; on the XC70 we have seen the system try to regenerate up to five times in 150 miles, each attempt lasting up to 15 to 20 minutes. Attempts that frequent mean the filter is heading for a blockage.
