We’re seeing a lot of Vauxhall Zafira’s come through our doors recently for the common Zafira DPF Problems which we’ve also written about previously. Once the DPF is blocked it is advised to have the problem rectified immediately so to avoid future problems.

The most common problem we see soon after blocked DPF issues is the EGR valve malfunction. The DPF system and EGR Valve are both connected directly to the exhaust system and so can directly affect each other as well. What Is An EIS & How Does It Work?

 

The Electronic Ignition Switch (EIS) is a vital component in the Mercedes-Benz vehicle’s security system. It is responsible for controlling the vehicle’s immobiliser, which prevents the engine from starting without the correct key. The EIS is also responsible for controlling other security features such as the central locking system and the alarm.

If the code matches the one stored in the EIS, the immobiliser is deactivated, the ESL (Electronic Steering Lock) is disengaged and the engine can be started. The Volkswagen Passat EGR Valve can be very problematic because these cars suffer from Turbo failures. Once the turbocharger has failed, oil is passed through the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and gunks up the valve flap causing a sticky EGR valve. As vehicles age, wear & tear will cause oil to weep through the oil seals of a turbocharger and not necessarily become a fault with the unit as such but can cause faults with the EGR unit as this oil builds up. When the EGR valve does get sticky, then it will eventually cause problems which can lead to mechanical failure of the EGR valve and other components.

Why does blanking the Peugeot 307 HDI EGR Valve system cause these negative effects?

If the EGR valve is blanked off, then no exhaust gasses will recirculate back to the intake manifold and into the engine. – However, the engine ECU does not know that you have blanked off the EGR Valve, so when the Engine ECU calculates how much diesel to inject on each cycle, it will be doing so with the EGR flow included in it’s calculations.

In order to properly remove the EGR valve and stop it recirculating exhaust gasses without the negative effects as described above, you will need to have the engine ECU remapped accordingly to tell the ECU that the EGR valve is to remain shut at all times. The engine ECU will then re-calculate the injection cycle to compensate for the EGR valve being closed and thus you will experience true benefits of having the EGR valve removed.
