Can a headlight control module be repaired?

In the vast majority of cases, yes — and repairing the module is usually the right call rather than replacing an entire headlamp. A headlight control module (also called a light control module, xenon control unit or LED driver, depending on the system) is a circuit board. When it fails, the fault is typically a small number of components: blown output transistors, a failed voltage-conversion stage, internal connections fatigued by years of heat cycling, or water ingress at a connector.

Because the failure sits at board level, it can be diagnosed and repaired at board level. We identify the failed components, replace them, and reinforce the known weak points — so the repaired module is often more robust than the original design. How to tell whether it's the bulb, the ballast or the module

Headlight faults get misdiagnosed constantly because the symptoms overlap. A methodical check saves you buying parts you do not need. Read the pattern of the fault — not just “the light is out” — to point at the component that has actually failed.

The quickest useful test: swap a known-good bulb from the other side. If the light still will not work, the fault is upstream — the ballast, igniter or control module. That is exactly the point at which a board-level repair, rather than another bulb, is the answer.

Xenon and HID faults — ballast and igniter, not just the bulb

A xenon (HID) system has three parts that can fail: the bulb (D1S, D2S, D3S or D4S), the igniter that strikes the initial high-voltage arc, and the ballast that regulates the arc once it is lit. A bulb at the end of its life turns pink or purple and dims gradually. A ballast fault behaves differently — the light strikes and then cuts out, flickers, or fails to light at all while the bulb itself is perfectly good. On many BMW, Mercedes and Audi systems the xenon control unit also communicates over the vehicle bus and logs a fault code when it fails.

DRL, adaptive (AFS) and LED dropout faults

Daytime running lights and LED signatures fail in a very recognisable way: one strip, or one section of a strip, goes dark while the rest keeps working. That is almost always a failed LED driver or an internal fault on the LED board — not a blown fuse, which would take the whole circuit out at once. These faults can be repaired at board level by reflowing the joints and replacing the failed driver stage or LED string, rather than scrapping the lamp.

Adaptive front lighting (AFS) — the system that swivels the beam into corners — usually fails either at the control module or at the stepper motor that moves the projector. A dashboard warning paired with a beam stuck straight ahead is the classic sign. We test and repair the control side of these systems and calibrate them before return.

Cracked lenses, misting and water ingress — the physical repairs

Not every headlight fault is electronic. Modern headlamp lenses are polycarbonate, not glass, and they crack on impact, craze with age, or start letting water in when the seal or breather fails. Condensation and misting inside the unit are the visible symptom of a failed gasket or a hairline crack in the housing — and left alone, that trapped moisture is often what then kills the electronics inside.

We repair the physical unit properly: replacing lenses and gaskets, resealing the housing, welding cracked housings and broken mounting tabs, and drying and treating units that have suffered water ingress. This is genuine repair of your own headlamp — not a DIY restoration polish, a glue-and-tape patch, or a bulb change. Repair or replace? What a genuine headlamp really costs

Replacing a whole headlamp is increasingly the expensive option. A genuine adaptive or LED headlamp from a main dealer often runs to several hundred — and sometimes well over a thousand — pounds. Many now ship as a bare housing (a “carcass”) with no control modules fitted, which then have to be sourced and programmed to the car separately, adding to both the bill and the downtime.

Against that, a board-level repair of the existing module keeps the original, correctly-matched unit on the car and removes the failure at its root. Replacement genuinely makes sense when a housing is damaged beyond repair or the optics are shot. But when the lens and reflector are sound and only the electronics have failed, repair is almost always the more sensible route — mechanically and practically.

Do repaired modules need coding or programming?

Some do, some do not — it depends on the system. Many remanufactured modules are returned ready to fit with no coding required, because we retain the original unit’s programming rather than supplying a blank replacement. Where a module does need to talk to the rest of the car — many BMW, Mercedes and Audi lighting systems do — we program and calibrate it on dealer-level diagnostic equipment before it leaves us, so it arrives ready to fit and function.

That is the hidden cost of buying a new, blank module: it still has to be coded to your vehicle, usually at a dealer, before it will work. Repairing and returning your own unit removes that step in most cases.

Is a faulty headlight an MOT failure in the UK?

Yes. A headlamp that does not work, is insecure, or has a badly damaged or misaligned lens is an MOT failure, and using a vehicle on the road with a defective obligatory lamp can be an offence under the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations. A cracked lens that lets water in, a dead dipped beam, or a DRL that has stopped working are all faults an MOT tester will pick up.

Fixing the fault properly — rather than taping over a crack or living with an intermittent light — keeps the car both legal and safe for other road users. A correctly repaired and calibrated unit puts the beam back where it belongs, at the right output.

Can a headlight module be repaired?

Yes — in most cases. A control module is a circuit board, and the usual faults (blown output stages, fatigued internal connections, water-damaged connectors) can be repaired at component level and the weak points reinforced, rather than replacing the whole headlamp.

Can xenon headlights be repaired?

Yes. Xenon faults usually sit in the ballast or igniter rather than the bulb — a light that strikes then cuts out, flickers, or will not light while the bulb is fine points to the control unit, which we repair directly.

How do I tell if a headlight control module is faulty?

Do headlight modules need to be programmed after repair?
