Description

Summary: ABS, brake and DSC warnings lit together on an E39 5 Series (1995–2004) often trace to the BMW E39 ABS pump’s control module, even when the code names a wheel-speed sensor. We repair your own module at circuit level, it goes back in with no coding needed, and a lifetime warranty applies.

E39 fitment and codes

  • Fits: BMW 5 Series E39, 1995–2004
  • Versions: ASC or DSC
  • Typical codes: 51, 58, 88, 115

The E39 warning pattern: ABS, brake and DSC

  • ABS, brake and DSC lights on together
  • Lights clearing at ignition off, then returning
  • Wheel-speed-sensor codes back after a new sensor
  • Pressure-sensor codes 51 or 115
  • DSC light alone, with precharge-pump code 58 or 88

The brake pedal works as normal; anti-lock and stability control are off, so the wheels can lock in a hard stop.

Why the module blames good wheel-speed sensors

Every wheel-speed signal passes through the module first. Once age, engine-bay heat and vibration wear its electronics, it can reject a sound signal and blame the sensor.

Test the sensors, wiring and plugs first; if they check out and the code returns, look at the module next.

Sending your E39 module to us

Removing the unit is your garage’s part; it then posts the module to our workshop. We measure it on the bench under heat and vibration and carry out a circuit-level repair; it must pass those measurements before it ships. As your car’s own module, it already holds its VIN coding.

E39 ABS checks before you order

Only the DSC light is on. Is it still the module?

It can be. Code 58 or 88 is logged against the precharge pump, and the module that drives that pump can be the source of it. One honest exception: a steering-angle sensor upset by a wheel alignment can light DSC on its own, so mention any recent alignment on the repair form.

Can I fit a used module from another E39?

It is possible, but a donor module must be coded to your car’s VIN, it has to match your car’s ASC or DSC version, and one from an automatic fitted to a manual logs a gearbox communication fault. Your own repaired module avoids all three, because it already belongs to the car.
