What this service repairs, and why the A1 has four names for it
The names are not trivia; they decide where an A1 owner ends up. Search for gearbox repair and you find rebuild shops working on clutches, gears and bearings. Search for the mechatronic unit and you find electronics. What is repaired here is the mechatronic unit alone — the transmission control electronics and the hydraulic valve body sharing one housing inside the gearbox.
The mechanical side is not. Worn dual-clutch packs, damaged gears and the bearings that whine on the move are jobs done with the gearbox opened up, and no electronics work reaches them. If that is what your A1 needs, this is not the service for it.
Which S tronic is fitted to an Audi A1?
S tronic is Audi’s badge for the dual-clutch gearbox Volkswagen sells as DSG. Across the 2010 to 2018 A1 the overwhelming majority carry the seven-speed dry-clutch DQ200 — the transverse unit shared with the Polo, Ibiza, Fabia and Golf, often wearing the gearbox code 0AM.
That matters before anyone orders a part. Seven-speed S tronic also describes the DL501 fitted to the larger, longitudinally-engined Audis — A4, A5, A6, Q5 — a wet-clutch gearbox with an entirely different mechatronic. The number on your own unit’s label settles which you have; the model year and trim do not.
The DQ200’s design explains why A1 complaints so often read as pressure faults rather than gear faults. Its clutches run dry, and its mechatronic carries a sealed hydraulic circuit of its own — an electric pump and an accumulator, kept apart from the gear oil. Lose pressure there and the pump works far harder than it was built to, which is how a healthy pump gets condemned for a leak elsewhere. What A1 owners notice first
The complaints that arrive with these units:
- Rough or jerking changes, or a hesitation as you pull away.
- Reverse turning reluctant, or sixth disappearing, while the other gears work.
- The EPC light on, or the gear display flashing.
- Limp mode: one gear held and road speed capped.
- No drive at all once the gearbox has shut itself down.
When one gear disappears and the rest behave, the fault is narrower than the whole unit — a selector or a position sensor rather than a dead module. Stored codes here tend to name position sensors or a failure to build pressure, so write them down before anyone clears them. Limp mode and a loss of drive change what the car can safely be asked to do, so plan a short trip to somewhere it can be looked at rather than carrying on as normal.

Removal is workshop work and the gearbox fluid comes out with the unit, so agree the sequence with whoever is doing the job first.

Is S tronic the same as a DSG?
Yes. S tronic is Audi’s name for the dual-clutch gearbox Volkswagen badges as DSG. On an A1 that is the transverse seven-speed dry-clutch unit; the seven-speed S tronic in an A4 or a Q5 is a different gearbox with a different mechatronic, which is why matching on the name alone gets the wrong part ordered.
Is this a gearbox rebuild?
No. It is a repair of the mechatronic unit — the control electronics and hydraulic valve body inside the gearbox — carried out here and returned to you by post. Clutch packs, gears and bearings are mechanical work on the gearbox itself and are not part of this service.
My A1 has lost reverse but the other gears still work — has the whole unit failed?
Not necessarily. When one gear goes while the rest behave, the fault is usually narrow — a selector or a position sensor rather than a failed module. It still needs testing to confirm, because the same complaint can come from the mechanical side of the gearbox.
How do I confirm which unit my A1 has?
