Description

The Audi A7 (C7 Sportback, 2011–2018) is steered by an electromechanical power steering rack — the assist motor and its control module are built into the rack itself, with no separate hydraulic pump anywhere in the system. The A7 is a long, fast five-door built to feel effortless at speed, and a large part of that composure comes from precisely metered steering assistance. When the electronics inside the rack fail, that assistance is lost in an instant and the car turns heavy and unrefined to steer. We repair the A7’s original rack and steering ECU at component level and return the same unit, rather than fitting a replacement that carries the identical design weakness.

What you’ll notice first

The unmistakable sign is the red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” message on the instrument cluster. Read it literally — once that warning is active, do not continue driving the A7.

  • Red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” warning on the cluster
  • Steering that suddenly turns heavy and unassisted, most obvious when parking or turning at low speed
  • Loss of the smooth self-centring the A7 normally has coming out of a bend
  • Assistance dropping out without warning, in some cases at road speed
  • On some cars the A7 will not start while the fault is active

The fault codes we see

Scanning an affected A7 rack, two codes come up again and again:

  • C10AD29 — Motor Position Sensor
  • B200049 — Internal Control Module Error

Both are internal to the rack’s own electronics — not the track rods, the column or the loom — which is why a dealer scan usually ends with a quote to replace the entire rack.

Where the failure actually is

The weak points sit inside the rack’s integrated steering ECU. The motor position sensor (C10AD29) stops reliably reporting the assist motor’s position, so the module can no longer trust its own feedback and shuts the assistance down as a safety measure. Separately, the control module’s own circuitry can fail internally (B200049). The mechanical rack and pinion are rarely the problem — it is the sensor and control board, worn by years of heat and vibration, that give out.

Repairing the A7 rack rather than replacing it

Because the fault lies in the sensor and control electronics, your A7’s original rack can be repaired at component level rather than scrapped for a complete new assembly. This is a mail-in repair-and-return service: you send us the failing rack and steering ECU, our engineers carry out circuit-level board repair on the sensor and control module, and we return your own unit — repaired to meet or exceed OE specification with the known weak points reinforced. Every unit is proven on our in-house Hardware-in-the-Loop rigs, which simulate real heat, vibration and load before dispatch, and most remanufactured parts carry a lifetime, unlimited-mileage warranty. Keeping your original rack also means the A7’s existing coding stays intact, with no part-matching against the C7 chassis.

Once you have completed checkout, print the repair form, add your details and the fault you are seeing, and include it in the box with your A7 rack — you can also send it through to us ahead of the unit. That way our engineers can begin work the moment your rack reaches the bench. If you are not certain the rack is the exact part your car needs, our wider electric power steering repair service covers the related columns, motors and control units.
