Description
The electric power steering rack fitted to the Audi Q5 (8R, 2011–2018) is an electromechanical unit — the assist motor and its control module are built into the rack itself rather than driven by a separate hydraulic pump. On a crossover the size and kerb weight of the Q5, that motor is doing real work every time the wheel is turned, so when the electronics inside the rack fail the loss of assistance is immediate and hard to miss. We repair the Q5’s original rack and steering ECU at component level and return the same unit — not a like-for-like swap that carries the same weakness.
How the fault shows on a Q5
The clearest sign is the red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” message on the instrument cluster. On the Q5 this is often intermittent at first — it appears, clears after a restart, then returns and eventually stays on. It should be treated exactly as it reads: do not continue driving the vehicle once the warning is active.

- Sudden loss of assistance, in some cases reported at higher road speeds

The fault codes behind it
When the Q5 rack is scanned, two codes recur:
- C10AD29 — Motor Position Sensor
- B200049 — Internal Control Module Error
Both point inward, to the electronics within the rack rather than to the tie rods, column or a wiring fault — which is why a fault-code read alone rarely persuades a main dealer to do anything short of replacing the complete rack.
What actually fails
The two common failure points sit inside the rack’s integrated steering ECU. The motor position sensor (code C10AD29) stops reporting the assist motor’s position reliably, so the module can no longer trust its own output and shuts the system down. Separately, the control module’s own electronics fail internally (code B200049). Mounted low and close to the road, the Q5 rack lives with years of heat, vibration and moisture, and it is the sensor and control board — not the mechanical rack and pinion — that give out first.
Can the Q5 rack be repaired instead of replaced?
Yes. Because the fault is in the sensor and control electronics, the Q5’s original rack can be repaired at component level rather than scrapped for a complete new assembly.
