Description
The Audi RS4 (B8, 2011–2018) is a high-performance V8 Avant — a fast estate that carries load and is driven hard, both of which stress the electronics inside its power steering rack. The RS4’s EPS rack is electromechanical: assist motor and control module integrated into the rack, no hydraulic pump. When the internal sensor and control electronics fail, assistance is lost and the steering turns heavy. We repair the RS4’s original rack and steering ECU at component level and return the same unit, with the weak points reinforced rather than replaced like-for-like.
What actually fails
The failure is electronic and sits inside the rack’s integrated steering ECU. The motor position sensor stops reporting the assist motor’s position reliably, so the module shuts assistance down rather than trust feedback it cannot rely on. The control module’s own circuitry can also fail internally. A loaded, hard-driven estate puts sustained heat and vibration through the unit, and it is the sensor and control board — not the mechanical rack and pinion — that fatigue first.
The fault codes
- C10AD29 — Motor Position Sensor
- B200049 — Internal Control Module Error
Both are internal to the rack’s electronics rather than the suspension or loom, which is why a dealer scan usually ends with a full rack replacement quote.
How it shows on the road
The warning is the red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” message on the cluster. It means exactly that — stop driving the RS4 once it appears.
- Red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” cluster warning
- Heavy, unassisted steering, most obvious at parking speed with a loaded estate
- Loss of self-centre as the wheel unwinds out of a bend
- Assistance dropping out suddenly, in some cases at speed
Repairing the RS4 rack
Because the failure is electronic, your RS4’s original rack can be repaired at component level rather than scrapped for a complete new assembly. This is a mail-in repair-and-return service: send us the failing rack and steering ECU, and our engineers carry out circuit-level board repair on the sensor and control module before returning your own unit — repaired to meet or exceed OE specification with the weak points reinforced. Every unit is proven on our in-house Hardware-in-the-Loop rigs that simulate real heat, vibration and load, and most remanufactured parts carry a lifetime, unlimited-mileage warranty. Your original coding is retained throughout. A new OE rack for a limited-production RS4 Avant is both costly and increasingly hard to find, and a secondhand one carries the same fatigued electronics that failed on yours — repairing your original avoids the wait on a scarce part and the gamble on another high-mileage unit, and the estate goes back to carrying load with its steering fully restored.
When your order is placed, print the repair form, record the codes and symptoms, and pack it in the box alongside your RS4 rack — or send it over beforehand. Having it travel with the unit means nothing holds up the repair once it reaches us. If you’re not certain the rack is the part at fault, our wider electric power steering repair service covers the related steering hardware.
