Signs your M3 throttle actuator is failing

Five signs of a failing BMW M3 S65 throttle actuator: limp mode, EML and DSC lights, code 2B21, hesitation, rough idle

The S65 has a throttle actuator for each cylinder bank. When one stops following the position the engine computer (DME) demands, the DME logs a fault and cuts power to protect the engine. You will usually notice:

  • A sudden loss of power and limp mode
  • The EML and DSC warning lights
  • A throttle valve actuator code such as 2B21
  • Hesitation when you press the accelerator
  • A rough idle, or revs that hunt

At first a restart usually clears it. Over time the episodes come closer together.

Why they fail, and how we test yours

Mounted on a hot, high-revving V8, the actuators live through heat cycles, vibration and age.

Your garage removes the unit and posts it to us. On our in-house Hardware-in-the-Loop rigs we test it under load, measuring how it tracks the demanded position across its full travel. It is retested after repair and returned to you — your own unit, not an exchange.

Five-step mail-in repair: garage removes the unit, tested under load, repaired, retested, returned to you

M3 throttle actuator questions

Can I keep driving my M3 in limp mode?

Gently, and only as far as you need to. Limp mode is the DME cutting power to protect the engine, so the car can feel flat and unpredictable just when you need it to respond, such as joining a fast road. Book the repair rather than living with it.

Will clearing the fault code fix it?

Only for a while. Clearing the code or restarting the car often brings full power back, but a failing actuator keeps tripping the same fault, and the episodes tend to come closer together until the car stays in limp mode.

Which M3 models does this repair cover?

The E90 saloon, E92 coupé and E93 convertible M3 built from 2007 to 2013, all of which use the S65 V8. If your unit carries a different part number, put it on the repair form and we will check it.
