Description
Summary: ABS and traction-control lights on together, with 5DF5 stored, typically mean the Mini ABS pump has found a fault inside its own control unit. We repair the original from your 2000–2006 Mini Cooper R50, and it goes back with its coding intact.
- Built for: Mini Cooper R50, 2000–2006
- Code: 5DF5, control unit internal fault
Two lights, one code
- ABS and traction-control lamps lit at the same time
- No ABS in an emergency stop
- 5DF5 stored: control unit internal fault
Once this fault sets, ABS and traction control are normally off. You still have brakes, but a wheel can lock in a hard stop, and the warning fails the MOT: have it checked straight away.
What 5DF5 tells your garage
The pump’s control unit watches every wheel and steps in when one starts to lock. 5DF5 is that unit reporting a fault inside itself: the module, not a sensor.
A sensor, wire or poor connection can light the same lamps too, so the codes are read before anything is condemned. What wears the unit out is ordinary motoring: heat, vibration and damp.
Your own unit or a second-hand one?
A used unit from another Mini has to be coded to your car before it works. Your repaired original keeps the coding it already had.
Taking it off falls to your garage, or to you; a padded box and the post do the rest. We test its communication and function, repair it at circuit level, then run the tests again; it must pass to come home.
R50 ABS questions
Is 5DF5 a pump fault or a module fault?
It is logged as a control unit internal fault, so it concerns the module, the electronic part of the assembly. You do not need to separate the two before booking: we test the pump and module as they arrive and repair what the testing shows.
Why has traction control gone off as well?
Traction control works through the same ABS unit, so when that unit reports an internal fault both systems are normally switched off together and both lamps stay lit. You can still brake, but the help in a skid has gone, so have the car checked before relying on it again.
