Skoda DSG/CVT Transmission Control Unit Problems + Repairs
Has your Skoda ever gone in to Limp Mode? Do the PRNDS lights ever just start flashing? If so, these could be symptoms of a faulty Automatic Transmission Control Unit, or more commonly known as the Gearbox ECU. Regardless of whether you own an automatic or semi-automatic, S-Tronic or Mechatronic, a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) or a Direct Shift Gearbox, all could be diagnosed with this issue. Occasionally these can be repaired by a simple gearbox oil change or a software update; however, this is not always the case as it may be due to a fault in your Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Common DSG / CVT Transmission Controller Concerns
Some of the most common faults that have been reported to us by customers in the past regarding DSG/CVT Transmission Controllers include:
- Power Loss
- Jerking In/Out of Gears
- Gearbox Fails when it Overheats
- Gearbox going into Neutral
- Not going in to Gear
- Loss of Reverse Gear
- “PRNDS” Light Flashing
- Limp Mode (Fail-Safe)
If any of the above faults sound familiar, you may have noticed that the issues can sometimes be irregular; however it starts to gradually worsen depending on the nature of the problem. If the Transmission Control Module is the cause of the failed unit, it can occasionally be repaired, however this is not always the case.
Common TCM related DTC Fault Codes

General Part Numbers for Skoda Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
If you are an owner of a faulty DSG Gearbox ECU, you will be aware that the costs of replacing the unit from local dealers are well in the excess of £1000 + VAT. This price will not include programming, which you will have to pay extra for, and it will generally only come with a standard 12 Month Warranty. If you’re offered the option of a second-hand used part to replace your DSG/CVT Transmission ECU, then this will only come with a 30-90 day limited warranty, and again, will require programming at an extra cost.
If you have identified the problem with your DSG Transmission Control Unit, and require a part number, you can find a list of our most common repair or exchange units below – however if you do not find yours on the list, please do not hesitate to call us on 0203 815 9441 for further information about testing and repairing your unit.
