BMW 1-Series E81 / E82 / E87 / E88 Instrument Cluster Repairs

Speedo Instrument Cluster Problems - BMW 1 SeriesBMW 1 Series Dashboard Instrument Cluster Problems & Repairs
The BMW 1 Series came fitted with a BORG manufactured dashboard instrument cluster (speedometer) unit. These units have been known to fail under varying conditions and the faults can also vary quite a lot. The instrument cluster faults are not specific to certain models, all BMW 1 Series E81/E82/E87/E88 can be affected, including:

BMW 116i / 118i / 120i / 130i / 116D / 118D / 120D / 123D

If you have a faulty instrument cluster unit, you may have been advised to have the part replaced. A new replacement part will come with a 12-month warranty and can be very expensive and will require coding / programming to your vehicle. The other common alternative people go for is the purchase of a second-hand used part which will come with a limited warranty, typically 30-90 days and will also require coding / programming to your vehicle. A used instrument cluster must also be calibrated to read the correct mileage which is an additional cost.

Common Instrument Cluster / Dashboard Problems

  • Backlight Illumination Failure
  • Backlight Flickers
  • No Sound
  • Gauges Flicker & Reset to 0
  • Indicators & High Beam Warning LED’s Not Working
  • LCD Pixelated or Faded
  • Speed Stays at 0mph.
  • Only One Side of the LCD Works
  • Complete Power Failure

Our Instrument Cluster Rebuild Service
We are able to fully test & repair the BMW 1 Series instrument cluster unit. We use new genuine OEM components when rebuilding dashboard speedometers to ensure that each and every rebuilt cluster unit meets & exceeds OE specifications. All of our repaired instrument cluster units will come with our Lifetime warranty and will not require coding when refitting back to the vehicle. Also, the unit will not lose any memory of mileage so will not require mileage correction either.

We also offer a professional fitting service if required.

  • Hi, my friend has asked me to look at his BMW 1 series 2012, the rev counter sticks and sometimes doesn’t work at all. He has been quoted somewhere in the region of £1000 To supply and fit a new binnacle,(BMW main dealer) can this be repaired Cheaper as its not worth doing for that amount of money?

    • Hi Dave

      Thanks for the enquiry,

Sticking rev counters are a common problem that we’ve seen across a range of BMW’s. We can test for this fault and if repairable, the costs are just a fraction of what a new unit would be. I have sent you an email with full information and pricing. If you have any questions, please reply to the email and we’ll be happy to assist you.

      Kind Regards

  • E82 118D, Instrument cluster intermittently (Although now most of the time) throws up all warning lights and the gauges flicker around. Battery and alternator have been checked, no moisture around fuse / relay boxes. Is this something you have seen before, will it require a new instrument cluster? can you provide a price? Thanks.

    • Hi Jamie

      Thanks for the enquiry,

We have seen similar faults not just in BMW clusters but on other makes and models as well. We can certainly test for these faults and have a great success rate in repairing the units. I have sent you an email with full information and pricing.
