Ford Focus Electric Power Steering Column Repairs
Ford Focus Electric Power Steering Problems
Are you finding that your steering is heavy in both directions on your Ford Focus? Or do you find that there is a loss in Power Steering? If so, it may be due to a fault with your Electric Power Steering Column. Hydraulic systems that were fitted to earlier models were replaced with Electric Steering Columns which work great in concept, however this is an expensive part which is a very common failure and they all end up failing at some point, therefore either requiring repair or replacement.
Ford Focus Electric Steering Column – Common Faults
Many of the faults that occur with the Electric Power Steering on a Ford Focus will begin intermittently, and develop in to faults as listed below:
- Power Steering Light illuminating on the dash
- Intermittent Loss of Power
- Complete Loss of Power Steering
- Heavy Steering in Both Directions
The symptoms above are an indication of a faulty Electric Power Steering Column, and if ignored, it will go on to fail completely. This will cause the steering warning light to remain illuminated on the dash and the steering will go completely heavy with no power assistance.
If the fault is with the Electric Power Steering Column, the options are either to replace or repair. Replacing it with a brand new unit directly from Ford can cost in the region of £000.00 + VAT (Plus Labour + Coding) which is very expensive. You could also opt for a second hand part which in the first instance will seem more viable due to it being cheaper, however the risks involved with this include not knowing how long it will last due to limited knowledge of previous maintenance history, and it will generally only come with a limited 30 – 90 day warranty.

Complete failure no warning
Hi Rebecca
Thanks for the enquiry,
I’m sorry to hear that the steering failed on you completely without any warning. It’s a very common situation to be in, however, there are many reasons a steering column can fail and as they are coded to the vehicle, it’s always best to remanufacture the existing unit. We have sent you an email with full information and pricing, including costs of our removal + fitting services if required.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to respond to the email.
Kind Regards
Jason

I have a 2011 Ford focus ztec with EPS which has failed with no power steering .
I’ve had a couple quotes for repairing the unit off the vehicle
if you can quote for both on and off the vehicle
regards David Edgar
Hi David
Thanks for the enquiry,
We test all units on a custom-built testing rig before & after remanufacturing it, to confirm the faults and that the repair was successful before returning the unit to the customer. For this reason, we can only offer repairs once the unit has been removed from the vehicle and I’m happy to confirm we do offer the removal/fitting service for this part too.
I have sent you an email with full information and pricing. If you have any questions or would like to proceed with a booking, please reply to the email and we’ll be happy to assist you.
Kind Regards
Jason
