Hesitation as you press the accelerator, uneven pick-up through the rev range and a sluggish response you might first put down to the car’s age are typical of an A4 throttle body on its way out. The throttle body controls how much air the engine takes in, opening and closing on commands from the engine management, so when it stops following those commands accurately the engine feels flat and unpredictable. Heat and years of vibration under the bonnet wear on it. Your garage removes the throttle body and posts it to us, we repair the A4’s own unit and return it, and the garage runs the throttle adaptation as part of refitting.

A faulty accelerator pedal sensor, an inaccurate MAF reading, a wiring or connector fault and low battery voltage can all feel much the same from the driver’s seat.
