Audi A4 (2011 – 2018) Electric Power Steering Rack

On an Audi A4 B8 (2011–2018), the red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” warning points almost every time to the electromechanical steering rack. The A4 has no hydraulic pump: the assist motor and its control unit are built into the rack, and it is that integrated control side which gives out while the rack and pinion usually remain serviceable. We repair the rack already fitted to your A4 and send it back ready to refit.

Symptoms and fault codes

Take the warning literally — once it is showing, the car should not be driven. Before it becomes permanent, the fault often shows itself in other ways:

• Assistance that cuts out, then comes back after the engine is restarted
• Heavy, unassisted steering at parking and manoeuvring speeds
• Unusual noise from the rack when turning left or right
• A wheel that no longer self-centres out of a turn
• On some cars, a no-start while the fault is active

A scan normally returns C10AD29 (motor position sensor) and B200049 (internal control module error). Both are stored by the rack’s own control unit, not by the column or the wiring loom — which is why a dealer diagnosis tends to end in a quote for a complete new rack.

Why the A4 rack fails

The recurring cause is moisture. Once the rack’s seals have aged, water can reach the electronics inside the housing, and years of heat cycles and road vibration add to the damage. When the control unit can no longer rely on its own motor-position data, it switches assistance off rather than steer on figures it cannot trust — hence the sudden heavy wheel.

Fitment and part numbers

This repair covers the Audi A4 B8, chassis code 8K, 2011–2018. Rack numbers listed for non-dynamic A4 B8s (PR code QZ7) include 8K2 423 055 S, AC, AJ, AN, AS, BG, BN and BR. Those numbers do not cover cars with Audi dynamic steering.
