Audi Q5 (2011 – 2018) Electric Power Steering Rack

The Audi Q5 8R (2011–2018) is a heavy car to steer without help, so when its electric power steering rack fails the difference is felt at once. The rack carries its own assist motor and control unit — there is no hydraulic pump — and it is that electronic side, rather than the rack and pinion, that lets go. We repair the Q5’s own rack and return it, so the car gets back the unit that came off it.

Signs your Q5 steering rack is failing

• Red “Steering defective! Do not drive vehicle!” warning on the cluster
• Steering that turns heavy without warning — hardest to miss when parking
• A warning that clears after a restart, then returns and eventually stays
• Loss of assistance at higher road speeds, reported on some cars
• Poor self-centring after a turn
• Occasionally, a Q5 that will not start while the fault is active

What a diagnostic scan shows

C10AD29 (motor position sensor) and B200049 (internal control module error) are the two codes a failing Q5 rack returns again and again. Both come from inside the rack’s integrated control unit. That unit checks its own motor constantly, and once the information stops adding up it withdraws assistance as a safety measure — so a heavy wheel is the rack protecting itself, not proof that the rack is worn out.

Mounted low and close to the road, the Q5 rack spends its life exposed to spray, heat and vibration. Over the miles that takes its toll on the electronics long before the mechanical rack reaches the end of its life.

Is repairing the Q5 rack worth it?

When the codes point at the control electronics, as these two do, repairing the original is the more direct route. A replacement rack has to be matched to the car, and an exchange unit usually means returning your old rack as a core. Repairing yours avoids both: the rack goes back onto the same Q5 it came from, and many units are returned ready to fit with no coding required.
