Vauxhall / Opel EGR Valve Faults & Problems
Many modern Vauxhall / Opel vehicles have an EGR valve fitted to them which is a device designed to lower harmful emissions being released into the atmosphere. This is done by recirculating gasses back into the engine to be re-burnt, but during this process, carbon build-up in the inlet manifold and engine is a side effect that causes many problems, including the loss of power as well as a noticeable drop in the overall economy of the vehicle.

A blocked EGR Valve used to be a lot easier to repair on older models, however, with newer systems in place it has become more difficult to carry out an EGR delete. This is due to the systems being able to identify when an EGR has been bypassed / blanked off, which cause fault codes and warning lights to appear, and in some cases, causing the vehicle to go into “Limp Mode” which causes a decrease in power.

Some of the most common problems you will come across when the EGR is blocked on your vehicle are:

• Missfire
• Fluttering On Acceleration
• EGR Flap Position Sensor Faults

If any of the above faults sound familiar, you will be generally be advised to get your EGR replaced. This is an option that can work out to be quite costly, especially as it is also recommended that you get the EGR cleaned thoroughly with every other service to maintain it and prevent any further carbon build up. The other option would be to have the EGR Delete service which involves programming the ECU to tell the EGR Valve to remain shut at all times. This then ensures that no warning lights or fault codes appear at all, and thus stopping the vehicle from going into limp mode.
