Fiat Punto 5 Speed Manual Gearbox Problems

One of the most common failing manual gearboxes is the 5-speed fitted to the Fiat Punto. This common failing 5-Speed Manual Gearbox has many weak points, and known failures include: Front Bearing Failure (Lay-Gear / Input shaft), Worn Out Gears and Gear Hubs, Pinion Bearing Failure, Crown Wheel Failure and so on.

Depending on how the gearbox has failed, you may experience various problems and if a gearbox fault is caught in the early stages, the repairs can be much cheaper.

Common Fiat Punto Gearbox Faults:

  • Stuck in Gear
  • Jumping Out of Gears
  • Crunching Gears (especially 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th)
  • Gears Not Going In (especially 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th)
  • Noisy Gearbox (whining / grinding noise)

Note: If the front bearing has failed, you may need to change your clutch due to oil contamination.

What Sinspeed repairs, and what it does not

Sinspeed does not rebuild manual gearboxes, so worn bearings, gears or a failed crown wheel in the Punto’s 5-speed box are work for a gearbox specialist or your garage. If your Punto has no clutch pedal, it is a Dualogic, and refused gears or a flashing gear display there usually point to the clutch actuator, which we do repair: see our Fiat and Alfa Dualogic actuator repairs.
