Toyota Multi-Mode Transmission (MMT) Clutch Actuator + Gear Actuator Repairs
Multi-mode transmission, or MMT for short, is a type of sequential manual gearbox. Offered by Toyota and is commonly known to be fitted to the Aygo, Auris, Yaris and Corolla Verso models. The MMT comes with a conventional friction clutch and a mechanical gear selector mechanism which is controlled electronically. Instead of the conventional automatic transmission, which uses hydraulics and a torque converter. As many Toyota owners will be aware, this particular design has had many complaints and common failures with the clutch and gear actuator units.

Programming and the new replacement will only come with the standard 12-month warranty. If you opt for a second-hand part, it may work out slightly cheaper. But then it will also require coding/programming which requires dealer-level equipment and this will come at an additional cost with a limited 30 -90 day warranty. Keeping in mind the current issues that occur with these actuators. This could also work out to be more expensive due to the risk of it failing again.

That’s what I thought, but my Yaris of 2010, of less than 45000kilometers, does not have a good automatic transmission (like Prius, another car in the family) and cannot ‘climb’ uphill or/and uphill hairpin bends, so I have to change to manual gear shift; but this week it slipped into N[eutral] while I was driving uphill on a hairpin bend with a trail of cars both behind me and ahead of me and from opposite direction on a narrow road (public holiday, near village restaurants). It was very risky, as I could not put it into shift, either on automatic [E], or manual, on an almost perpendicular(!!!) axis. The cost of repair [needs new MMT, clutch actuator] is very high, car always and meticulously serviced by main dealers, I feel this should not have happened and there should have beeen a recall. Very disappointed with Toyota, had Rav4, Prius, etc. in the family. Lost faith.

Sometimes directly after starting it will not select any gears and stays in neutral. If I can select a gear the car runs great and isn’t a problem. If I disconnect battery this seems to reset problem and the car starts and gears can be selected.

2007 Auris MMT Had a minor shunt from rear whilst stopped in traffic And in first gear. Now when engine is warm and after a left turn first gear drops out in to neutral. Then wont select gear for 2-3 mins. Can shunts cause damage to actuators and what is solution if damaged?

Mine is toyota auris 1.6 2011model mmt gearbox. Started by not shifting from N to e. After it did then I parked home. Then funny mechanic removed the actuator found debris in actuator motor. Cleaned and replaced but now every thing is lost. No N on dash board. Does not start on first try the learning process. Now the engine doesn’t accelerate aswel stays in low idling mode

Toyota Yaris T-Spirit 2003 Automatic
Car has done 30K only. Worked fine until, slowing down, the clutch did not engage. When left at a standstill for a while eg 30 mins, the car would drive well. Then it would happen again. The local independent sent the clutch actuator away to a firm (like yours?) and for a while, it was fine. But recently it is happening again and my wife now can’t trust her lovely car. The actuator has been sent back to the firm and they have tested it and say it’s fine. Local garage says they have to see and do computer diagnostic whilst it has broken down, but that circumstance has not happened, as the car will work again after a short time. They borrowed it for a weekend and it behaved faultlessly. My friend said it could be electrics. Any ideas, please?

I have a Toyota Corolla verso T spirit Multi Mode Transmiasion 2005 model. For last few months i noticed having a problem. While driving or while changing gear or reducing speed, the vehicle is going back into normal mode and the ‘N’is flashing and the car does not move at all. After i Switch Engine Off And remove keys it is coming back in normal mode and ‘N’ stops blinking on the dashboard in few minutes or sometimes it is taking a long Time to come in normal mode. Having a Problem while driving in traffic thereby causing delay to other road users. Can your company help with this problem? My Toyota (Plate 56) has semi-automatic gearbox.
Often gearbox error lamp turns on on dashboard and depending if car is in motion, there are different following effects:
a. if car is stationary, then I can’t change gear from N to forward or reverse (still N is displayed on dashboard)
b. if car is driving on gear 1 or 2, then does not shift gear above 2 (2 is maximum)
c. if car is driving at higher gear (3-5) then at next stop it won’t automatically reduce gear to N and as the result engine stops having still gear 1 displayed on dashboard
I already refilled gearbox oil, which helped for approx 3 weeks, then problem appeared again.
I suspect problem is related with actuator and/or clutch

Hi, mum has a 53 plate Yaris which she’s owned from brand new. Fault occurs when pulling up to stop at junction or traffic. car will go into neutral and stay there. will not engage gear to get going again. switch ignition of for a few mins then all ok but fault reoccurs randomly. She had this happen before back in 2010 and after a very strong letter to Toyota MD we got it repaired FOC as goodwill. Dont think that’ll work again now LOL. Please can you help.

We then have to switch off the engine and wait until all the lights on the dashboard switch off (including the flashing N mode sign) and then turn the ignition back on to re-engage the automatic gearbox to E mode for it to start moving. Hi there, my Yaris 1.0 mmt, started to slip out of 3rd. Then had to brake hard in 4th at about 35-40mph. Car just revved showing 4th on display but could not select any gear. Turned off and can’t restart. Error codes P0808 and PO907basically saying gate and clutch selector problem. I have toyota corolla verso semi auto, 2005. When am driving on full speed, all serms ok. The clutch was changed earlier this year. I get a lot of stuttering and hesitation when l slow down in traffic and then the automatic transmission warning light will Cime and stay on. If l turn the engine off snd then restart the dar, the warming light will come back on after 2 minutes of driving.
I have found that leaving the car to sit for some hours, makes everything to Seem normal when driving but then the problem retruns again.
Is this something you can assist me to get rid of permanently?

After getting the battery replaced, my Toyota Aygo drove for few miles and all of sudden got stuck on Neutral. Got it checked by AA and the fault came back there is an open circuit on clutch actuator. Gut thinks it may be just a corroded connector or loose connection which led to this however he could not fix on the roadside. I was recovered to Reading. Call me on 075********.

I’ve got a intermittent transmission issue with my Toyota Yaris 1.33 VVT-i MMT semi-auto 59reg.
The transmission warning light have been showing up from cold start in recent months. When it lights up it won’t engage gears. Wait for a minute. Stop and restart it will work fine again. It some what tend to happen on a warm high humidity day or just warmer days. Last week was cold & raining and it worked fine with no issues. Today warm humidity again & it happened again.
it slipped out of gear during middle of drive several weeks ago. Turned off engine, wait a bit and try start again several time. It started work again in about 10 to 15 minutes of trying and manage to get home.
I went to have it diagnosed. Seems the bill could spiral and there’s no guarantee the problem will go away. It’s low mileage below 29000 miles.

I have an intermittent problem with the MMT. It slips out of gear into Neutral, mostly when decellerating under engine braking, eg coasting up to a roundabout. It can be at any speed. It started on a very occasional basis but it is now happening every journey. The transmission warning light also comes on at this time.
I have tried to show the problem to technicians and been told there is nothing they can do, apart from exchanging parts. I have a Toyota Yaris T3 from 2008. It cuts out at low speed , Especially at corners. When I press the acceleration it goes in the first gear a bit roughly. Sometimes when i start the car and move to E the N flashes a few times and the goes into E. no Cutting off at high speeds but today when i selected E instead of starting i had number 1 on the dashboard, not E or N. i had to wait a few minutes then try again to start. Has a intermittent fault wich is throwing itself into neutral dash warning light comes on but gear it was in still shows on dash. Leaving you with no drive, you then have to pull over wiggle gear stick until it goes into neutral, switch ignition off wait till warning light goes out then re Start engine and all is OK. Hi, I thought I’d posted this the other day but, for some reason, it’s not showing up. Anyway, I have a 2007 Toyota Verso with MMT which I’ve had from new; it has 185,000 Miles on the clock. For the last 4 or 5-years there has been a slapping noise when it changes from 2nd to 3rd (I think, maybe it’s 3rd to 4th, I’ve got so used to it that I don’t even know anymore). Anyway, when it started to do this I took it to Toyota and they could not diagnose the problem. All they did was to re-set everything on the computer. Anyway, since the car has kept going, I’ve ignored it. The problem I have now is that the clutch appears to be slipping. It’s not bad going forward but is much worse in reverse. So, I guess I need a new clutch and whatever part it is that’s making the noise. Can You Help Please?

The clutch has been changed in the past 100 km with a toyota clutch upgrade kit (self adjuting clutch plate. clutch disk, new pressure bearing, new fork) and sometimes the car jurkes when in sloe traffic and then goes into neutral. If I stop the engine and restart then it starts to work again. It happens Randomly not all the time. sometimes in slow traffic, i foind that the transmission is in no gear and it takes a few second to get into the first gear.

just recently bought a toyota Auris 1.6 T3 MMT Automatic. i noticed that when the gear is on Drive on a flat road it doesnt creep forward before you step on the gas pedal and when you put it on reverse it moves forward instead of it should starts to creep backward. and while youre on incline road when on Drive it doesnt hold, it creeps backward.

I have a 2007 Corolla Sedan D4D with MMT and has the following problems, jumps into neutral, have to turn off car and wait and re start then it allows me to go into gear and keep driving. And it also lights up the MMT fault light on dash.
I am from Portugal so I would need to ship it to you. Can you provide me with price and turn around time? Is it possible that it is any other component causing this problem? Is it a sensor or a mechanical fault?

My car,Toyota Yaris 2006 model has an actuator assy clutch problem. The garage says one of the 4 components has totally failed, another one was “repaired”. The failed one works on the bench, but fails in the car. The car had been slipping into n several times especially under hot weather in small moving traffic. I reside in Manchester and recently purchased a Toyota Corolla Verso 1.8 MMT Semi Auto. When Driving above 70 mph, the MMT error code appears as well as alphabet “N”. Immediately the car will stop and will only work once I Switch off the ignition and restart. Please does this sound like a known problem? If yes, Is there a way forward?

I bought My corolla Verso 05 1.8 last week and it was driving perfectly until yeaterday when i stoped at red lights and the car went in to n and wasnt able to drive on. I had to wait 30-60 min and restart the engine before i could drive on. It happend twice in a 4 hour period.

Hello..my toyota corolla verso 05 keeps going in to neutral while driving and a circle red light with a straight line inside the circle comes up. I took it for diagnostic and they said no issue. My dealer told me I needed a new actuator assembly for my ’04 Verso but wouldn’t guarantee that would solve the problem. I authorised an hour’s work which showed the clutch plate was worn to the point that the actuator wasn’t working correctly. The actuator assembly, they said was, in fact, okay. Once the clutch plate and flywheel has been replaced it may be that the problems aren’t solved and I’d like to know if you’d rebuild the actuator assembly and at what cost.

Same as all the above, bought 04 yaris 2 & a half years ago, clutch went 4 days later, it was still under warranty so they replaced it, a year ago or so, after all the above problems, Toyota fixed some damaged teeth (???) & it was fine, until now, now the multi mode transmission warning light comes on, it’s gone into neutral, & I can’t do anything, Toyota said its acetuator & will cost £1000+ to fix, & that it’s not worth it, I don’t have £1000 & until August 2016, I’m still paying the finance on it, I think my only option is to scrap it, I can’t afford to buy another car while I’m still paying for this one

Hi, I have a Toyota Corolla Verso spirit VVT that struggles to go up the hill or change gear between 1,2&3. Moves well on 4&5 but struggles to pick up speed at gear 1, 2 & 3. Took the car to Toyota Steven Eagell for a thorough check and was told the following will need to be replaced.
1, the clutch actuator
2, the fly wheel
3, top up gear oil, clutch oil and break oil during/after replacing the items above.
