Problems after DPF Removal

Having the DPF removed is meant to bring peace of mind. After having endless battles up & down the motorway trying to regenerate your DPF, spending £ 100 if not £ 1000 taking it to dealerships for regenerations/oil changes and actual DPF replacements – a DPF Removal is meant to take the problem away completely & forever, leaving you with a vehicle that is reliable, efficient and responsive, with zero errors & zero problems. However, what people are left with is in many cases completely different. We’ve heard some real horror stories of people who have (before finding us), attempted to have their DPFs removed by other “companies” and “mobile agents”, problems such as:

Why do these problems occur?

Most problems are related to the software companies & mobile agents are using.

Firstly, we are against doing MOBILE DPF Removals and the reason behind this is, that the only way to do a “Mobile DPF Removal” is by using an automated piece of software which scans through the car ECU data and attempts to delete all data strings related to the DPF file structure (within pre-set parameters). However, this software can never 100% delete all data strings because they are interlinked and deep-coded with file structures relating to:

  • Fuel Rail Pressure
  • Exhaust Gas Temperature
  • Air / Fuel Ratio
  • & Many Others..

If the automated software were to delete the interlinked & deep-coded file structures, this would interfere with these sensors and cause data corruption and many errors to occur almost immediately after starting the engine. Some problems don’t occur for some time after the DPF has been removed.

In most cases, the automated software won’t delete these parts of the file, but then leaving part of the DPF file in place will also bring problems such as the vehicle falling back into limp mode, the DPF light coming back on, excessive smoke and as a result of this, an MOT Failure.

Unlike other companies & mobile agents, we do not touch any automated software. After reading and downloading the data from your ECU, we manually scan through the 1000’s of data strings looking for all DPF file structures. We then proceed to delete & modify any data strings to command the ECU that the DPF is no longer existing nor required on the vehicle for it to run correctly. In doing so, the ECU will run as it should without having a DPF on the car and will be guaranteed to not cause any errors. It is the only sure way to a successful DPF Removal.

Furthermore, just by removing the DPF, you cannot guarantee it will pass an MOT. Although it is not illegal to remove the DPF / FAP from the vehicle, it may still fail an MOT if your vehicle does not meet the necessary smoke detection levels at an MOT test.

After having successfully removed 100% of the DPF data file structure. we then proceeded to carry out a full smoke-correction session (inclusive of all DPF removals by Sinspeed). This enables us to fine-tune the system to run optimally and efficiently with no errors after having the DPF removed.

Why They Normally Fail
The Audi A4 1.9TDi and Audi A4 2.0TDi, both being Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) models commonly suffer problems with the turbo charger unit failing. Other common problems for the Audi A4 1.9 & 2.0 TDi (DPF model) is Diesel Injectors failing & Engine Oil contamination.  The reason they fail is most commonly due to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), located in the exhaust it is designed to trap soot / ash particles and by doing so, it restricts the airflow of exhaust gasses which in turn will increase the back-pressure. Excessive and long-term back-pressure will put a lot of strain on mechanical components and with the turbocharger being directly connected to the Diesel Particulate Filter, that is most likely the first unit to show signs of failure.

If it has not been properly maintained i.e. regular oil changes and allowing the engine time to warm up a little before a quick run. When you start a turbo engine from cold, the oil will be thick and gunky which takes time to travel around all components. For this reason, it is suggested that when starting the vehicle, allow 1-2 minutes before moving from a cold start. This will give time for the oil to warm up and when hot the oil is thinner which allows it to travel around mechanical components much faster. Once the oil is thin, the turbocharger is properly lubricated and spooling the turbo will be much safer. After a long drive where the turbo has been spooled up for long periods of time i.e. motorway runs.. it is advised that before turning the engine off, allowing the engine to stay running for 1-2 minutes while the turbo cools & spools down. Shutting off the engine immediately may result in back-spin which is not good at all and can damage seals, bearings and the fins on the turbines.

On a side note, when the DPF get’s blocked it’s a very expensive repair. However, Sinspeed does offer a very affordable & competitive DPF Removal Service.

Safe Driving Tips This Winter From SinspeedWell, the first day of snow this year in London and a simple 15 mile round trip which would normally take an hour or two max, has taken us 9 hours today and already we’ve seen half a dozen accidents & we fear there may be more to come. We need to take caution when driving this winter and this has steered my focus to road safety. Lets go over a few points to help all you drivers out this winter.

A few tips from Sinspeed for drivers this winter..

  1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
  3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
  4. Keep your lights and windshield clean.
  5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
  6. Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
  7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
  8. Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you’re likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
  9. Don’t assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
  10. Don’t over-inflate your tyres, instead, we always suggest under-inflating them a little to push more tread down on the ground.

Never panic, stay calm and always be thinking ahead. Below we’ve listed the key important points which every driver should go over and familiarise themselves with this winter to ensure our roads stay safe & in motion.

What to do if your rear wheels skid…

  1. Take your foot off the accelerator.
  2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they’re sliding right, steer right.
  3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control.
  4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently.
  5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal.

What to do if your front wheels skid…

  1. Take your foot off the gas and shift to neutral, but don’t try to steer immediately.
  2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in “drive” or release the clutch, and accelerate gently.

What to do if you get stuck…

  1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper.
  2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way.
  3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out.
  4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car.
  5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction.
  6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner’s manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going.

It’s a very common fault and we are now taking orders for these on a daily basis. When the throttle body fails, most garages will take it off and clean it up with carburetor cleaner and commonly on other vehicles this will normally do the trick, however, unfortunately the Nissan Micra although showing similar faults to other vehicles with failed throttle bodies (also known as air mass meters).. the fault is electrical and will not be cured with a squirt of carburetor cleaner.

The Common Failure
The BMW Mini in all it’s ranges is a beautiful car but unfortunately, it too has it’s flaws. The EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering) system also know as EHPAS (Electro-Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering) system is a major flaw in it’s design and almost all units are guaranteed to fail within 70k miles from new.

Why Do They Fail?
Believed to be a manufacturing defect, almost all of the electric mini power steering pumps will fail at some point or another unless they have been previously repaired by a qualified company that can meet & exceed the OE standards and rectify the common problems as we do to ensure they are future proof. The original units first fitted in 2001 to the BMW Mini’s were having the problem of not turning off with the engine. They were receiving a constant live which would drain the battery power and eventually burn out the motor in the electric steering pump. BMW did go on to try correct this issue & unfortunately, came to a bigger issue where they found that some of the newer models of the electric steering pump were in fact catching fire under the bonnet.. damaging the wiring harness at the same time. As you can imagine, an electrical fire under the bonnet of a petrol car can be VERY dangerous.

We’ve been successful in the removal of DPF filters for all other vehicles since 2007, however, with the Mazda 6 the problem was that there was no way of accessing the ECU data chip directly through the OBD port and not much luck chip-tuning via a BDM tool on a bench either. The Mazda 6 (both RF7K & RF8G / RF8X) are fitted with a Denso engine ECU unit and is heavily encrypted. The Mazda 6 DPF itself is relatively easy to remove as it sits in the middle section of the exhaust just below the downpipe – but physically removing the Mazda 6 DPF was never the problem, it was always the encryption of the ECU which restricted us and every other tuning company in the world.

In fact, there is to our knowledge, no other company currently in the UK who can offer a complete DPF removal service for the Mazda 6 without trying to “trick” the ECU. There are companies now popping up everywhere offering Mazda 6 DPF Removal services, claiming to “de-activate” the Mazda 6 DPF system but in actual fact all they are really doing is fitting a little box to your vehicle to “trick” the ECU into thinking the DPF is okay and then removing the filter from the exhaust. The problem is, the system is still active and will continue to regenerate – the result is excessive smoke and poor fuel economy.

Now keeping in mind this vehicle is still well within it’s manufacturers warranty period but some manufacturers deny a DPF problem being covered under warranty.
