What is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve?
An Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve, often referred to as an EGR valve is a mechanical flap designed to recirculate exhaust gasses back into the engine before they exit the exhaust into the atmosphere. This means that the gasses are going through the combustion cycle twice before exiting and so reducing the emissions of the vehicle.
In more technical detail, the EGR valve recirculates exhaust gasses back into the air/fuel mixture which in turn then dilutes the air/fuel mixture enough to keep the NOx compounds within breathable limits. This is done by allowing a specific amount of exhaust gasses enter into the inlet manifold via the EGR valve (dependant on throttle position, speed of the engine, outside air temperatures and so on..). Doing so, however, does reduce the rate of combustion and reduces the temperatures produced per combustion cycle and the end result is not only a reduced level of NOx compounds but also a significant decrease in performance from the vehicle.
The Problem With The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve System
When working with exhaust gasses, nothing is clean. Recirculating exhaust gasses is basically dumping the carbon-rich gasses back into the inlet manifold from the exhaust manifold or even from the turbocharger. It is expected that over time, carbon build up will occur and can interfere with the operation of the EGR valve flap. It could cause problems with the flap opening and closing properly.
If the vehicle is fitted with a turbocharger then the problems are more dramatic because with time, turbochargers are subject to wear & tear and so start leaking oil from the seals but naturally only in small quantities. This means not only will you have carbon-rich exhaust gasses passing through the EGR valve, but also oil. The oil & carbon mixture can quickly build up around the EGR valve and cause problems such as a sticky flap. – If your EGR valve flap is stuck open or stuck shut, then this is possibly the reason why.
Furthermore, the EGR valve system allows the leaking oil to pass up through the inlet system and into the inlet manifold and combustion chambers – where it shouldn’t be! – This will cause fluttering and loss of power as well as oil smoke.
EGR faults can cause various problems on a vehicle such as:
- Loss Of Power
- Smoke On Acceleration
- Fluttering On Acceleration
- Missfire
- EGR Flap Position Sensor Faults
These are some of the more common faults which can be related to the EGR system. In some cases the EGR valve can be removed and cleaned but this is only a temporary fix until the carbon builds up again and causes future problems. Replacement EGR valves can vary in price from anything as little as £150 to as much as £600. EGR valves are fitted to both petrol and diesel engines.

How much are you expected to pay on average for repairs?
Ignoring the warning lights and allowing the EGR valve system to continue getting blocked up will eventually lead to a complete failure of the EGR system in which case it would require a replacement unit instead of cleaning. If you pick up on the problem and get it treated right away, then having the EGR removed and cleaned is not so expensive. It will vary from vehicle to vehicle – anything from £30 – £120 but if you leave it beyond repair, then you could be faced with a much bigger bill when taking into consideration the cost of a new part and labour to fit the part.

Blanking off the EGR valve was common practice on older vehicles where it wouldn’t interfere with the on-board engine management system, also known as the Engine Control Unit (ECU). However, it is not advised to blank off the EGR valve on newer vehicles because the ECU will detect a fault and this will in turn cause the ECU to log a fault code, turn on the engine management light which is an immediate MOT fail and also possibly put the vehicle in to LIMP HOME MODE (SAFE MODE) – This will restrict the power of the engine and also reduce the fuel economy.

No, the EGR valve system is not a requirement for the MOT. Removing the EGR can in fact improve carbon emissions of the vehicle so it could in actual fact help to improve the vehicles emissions providing the EGR Removal (EGR Delete) session has been carried out professionally. i received a letter from Voltswagon that my Passat was One of the vehicles that required to have the Software change.
A few days later two lights appeared on the Dash Board and had to take it my local Garage and they change the EGR and told me it was an emission s problem and I took the Car to the Dealer I purchased the car in 2010.
They inspected the car and advise me that it was nothing to do with the Emissions Present Problem but it was a consequence of not driving enough mileage I had 39000 miles on the clock.
The Bill was a hefty one but I said xI would pay under protest until I reserved the right to get and Independent opinion.

I have got a used Octavia car model 2003 recently imported from Germany.I found that final service at it,s service book that had happened at 145000 km,in April 2014. Now i read it,s km is 85000 . Pls explain what had happened. Is there some thing wrong?.How it,s gauge shown this km in-spite it,s last service at 145000 km at April 2014.

I have blanked off egr mechanically on my Viano 2.2 CDI. After this operation I have P0105 and P2045 faults several time and goes to the limp mode. Had to re start engine for cleanup limp mode. Is the reason that i havent de activate EGR on ECU? Could you done your soft operation remotely?

Hi, My daughters Audi 1.9tdi has been throwing up fault code p0101-mass air flow fault. We replaced the maf but nothing changed. We had a mobile diagnosis man out who found the egr valve was very dirty-so we cleaned it which helped but still has hesitant spells which eventually trigger the eml light. I’ve since blanked off the vacuum pipe to the egr which brought an almost immediate eml light but car runs fine. Thinking an egr delete might be the answer, what do you think, how much and where are you? Thanks

Owned a Ford C-Max 2005, 2.0 TDCI with 3 limp moods so far. Mainly short distance with less than 5minuts drive.
Please kindly advise which option should work better on my car:
Clean EGR valve? or
Blank off the EGR valve? or
Custom EGR Delete (De-activation) Session?
Please confirm would the works causing failure on current MOT requirements?
And please provide a price for each.

Hi Jason – been reading previous posts, you obviously have huge experience so I hope you can help!
Bought my 2008 Fiesta TDCi (68k) 3 months ago, but I only realised there was a problem when first went on a longer journey.
It had been fine around town & on shorter trips. Then after 50 miles of smooth motorway cruising, I stopped at services for 20 mins. When I set off again, it started ‘missing’ & lurching (scary at 70mph!) on & off for the rest of the journey. Next few days on local trips, no problems.
Return journey – exactly the same thing happened – again was fine for the first hour, then stopped for toilets etc, & it started lurching on 2nd leg of journey.
Since then, every 2 weeks I do the same trip & the same thing happens – so the last time I left the engine idling in the car-park & we went into the services in a rota! Apart from 3 minor ‘jumps’, the 2nd leg was much smoother…
Had new fuel filter, fuel cleaner, new injector seals & cleaned jets – but garage says cannot replicate the fault on their test-drives, computer diagnostics blank. No warning lights show on dash. Seems only to happen on longer journeys, BUT noticed a few mild ‘hiccups’ over this last week starting to appear on shorter local trips under 10 miles, a recent appearance.
Could this all be due to a ‘sticky’ EGR valve? So strange that the fault is MUCH worse if I stop for a break after an hour of motorway driving!
I do not trust my garage to clean the EGR as they keep saying “no, it can’t be that” – please could you send me a price list if you think this valve could cause these symptoms, I would rather deal with the experts.

How can I book my Mercedes CDi for the EGR to be parmanent ly removed
I have a Skoda Octavia TDI Estate 2010. It started losing power intermittently (but not stalling or showing any fault indicators). We took it to the local Skoda garage who cleaned the air filters twice then changed the EGR valve at a cost of £1000. The car is still not right. Although it is no longer kangaroo hopping, it has twice broken down as if the battery was flat but there are no problems with the battery. Skoda have seen it again and they are now telling me that it is a fault with the engine control module. A replacement will cost yet another £1000. They are insisting that the EGR fault and the ECM fault are not related- just coincidence. Having read your website, I’m not so sure. What do you think?

It has an electronic egr so i can’t just blank the valve off as it will put out a fault code.
Can you turn this off electronically via the ecu?

I have a 2002 Nissan x trail 2.2. I had the egr removed from my vehicle due to it smoking and not having any power whilst it is on. my question is, is the egr the problem or is it something else. it has been tested by Nissan and the mechanic says it is working, however when put back on its starts to smoke.
hi,could you de activate the egr system on a seat altea 1.6 tdi 2010 model The glow plug light flashes , then the engine management light comes on and the engine goes in to limp mode.if you re set the lights it runs great for about a mile, Then the lights come back on.thanks martin.

Have 5 year old Mercedes C220 diesel . Was serviced in January. Only 32k miles. I am having to have the EGR replaced today ! The car has only done 500 miles since the service !
Does the mercedes dealership inspect the EGR at the service ? Would they clean it ? If they don’t clean it , should they at least inform me of the condition of the EGR to avoid this expensive part ?
