What is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve?
An Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve, often referred to as an EGR valve is a mechanical flap designed to recirculate exhaust gasses back into the engine before they exit the exhaust into the atmosphere. This means that the gasses are going through the combustion cycle twice before exiting and so reducing the emissions of the vehicle.

In more technical detail, the EGR valve recirculates exhaust gasses back into the air/fuel mixture which in turn then dilutes the air/fuel mixture enough to keep the NOx compounds within breathable limits. This is done by allowing a specific amount of exhaust gasses enter into the inlet manifold via the EGR valve (dependant on throttle position, speed of the engine, outside air temperatures and so on..). Doing so, however, does reduce the rate of combustion and reduces the temperatures produced per combustion cycle and the end result is not only a reduced level of NOx compounds but also a significant decrease in performance from the vehicle.

The Problem With The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve System
When working with exhaust gasses, nothing is clean. Recirculating exhaust gasses is basically dumping the carbon-rich gasses back into the inlet manifold from the exhaust manifold or even from the turbocharger. It is expected that over time, carbon build up will occur and can interfere with the operation of the EGR valve flap. It could cause problems with the flap opening and closing properly.

If the vehicle is fitted with a turbocharger then the problems are more dramatic because with time, turbochargers are subject to wear & tear and so start leaking oil from the seals but naturally only in small quantities. This means not only will you have carbon-rich exhaust gasses passing through the EGR valve, but also oil. The oil & carbon mixture can quickly build up around the EGR valve and cause problems such as a sticky flap. – If your EGR valve flap is stuck open or stuck shut, then this is possibly the reason why.

Furthermore, the EGR valve system allows the leaking oil to pass up through the inlet system and into the inlet manifold and combustion chambers – where it shouldn’t be! – This will cause fluttering and loss of power as well as oil smoke.

EGR faults can cause various problems on a vehicle such as:

  • Loss Of Power
  • Smoke On Acceleration
  • Fluttering On Acceleration
  • Missfire
  • EGR Flap Position Sensor Faults

These are some of the more common faults which can be related to the EGR system. In some cases the EGR valve can be removed and cleaned but this is only a temporary fix until the carbon builds up again and causes future problems. Replacement EGR valves can vary in price from anything as little as £150 to as much as £600. EGR valves are fitted to both petrol and diesel engines.

The EGR Valve system effects all vehicles and below you can see we have had experience with all types of vehicles suffering from EGR problems.

EGR Smoke ProblemsHow much are you expected to pay on average for repairs?
Ignoring the warning lights and allowing the EGR valve system to continue getting blocked up will eventually lead to a complete failure of the EGR system in which case it would require a replacement unit instead of cleaning. If you pick up on the problem and get it treated right away, then having the EGR removed and cleaned is not so expensive. It will vary from vehicle to vehicle – anything from £30 – £120 but if you leave it beyond repair, then you could be faced with a much bigger bill when taking into consideration the cost of a new part and labour to fit the part.

How can SINSPEED help reduce this cost & what are the options?
Other than cleaning and replacing the EGR valve system, there are two other more permanent solutions. Cleaning / replacing is a temporary fix to the on-going issues that many motorists are experiencing. So, what are your other two options?

  • Blank off the EGR valve
  • Custom EGR Delete (De-activation) Session

Blanking off the EGR valve was common practice on older vehicles where it wouldn’t interfere with the on-board engine management system, also known as the Engine Control Unit (ECU). However, it is not advised to blank off the EGR valve on newer vehicles because the ECU will detect a fault and this will in turn cause the ECU to log a fault code, turn on the engine management light which is an immediate MOT fail and also possibly put the vehicle in to LIMP HOME MODE (SAFE MODE) – This will restrict the power of the engine and also reduce the fuel economy.

We offer a safe and completely bespoke EGR Delete session whereby we de-activate the EGR system entirely from the vehicle. There is no need to install blanking plates and modify the original design of the vehicle which is also visible to others. We simply log into the vehicles on-board engine management system via the ECU and switch off the EGR valve to stop it opening and recirculating the mucky exhaust gasses and clogging up your engine. – Also, because we’ve done this professionally and via the ECU.. there will be no logged fault codes, no warning lights and no loss of power – because the ECU will accept our de-activation code and not look to register anything further from the EGR system.

What are the expected effects after having my EGR de-activated?
After we have carried out the EGR Removal and de-activated it from the vehicle’s ECU, your engine will be able to breath a lot better because all the air coming into the engine will be clean. This means the combustion of the air/fuel mixture will be quicker and more powerful – what’s more the engine will stay cleaner for longer and this will decrease the wear on the engine as well as other mechanical components.

You can expect the following gains from carrying out this simple EGR Removal service with us:

  • Sharper Throttle Response
  • More Power (+15% More BHP)
  • Better Fuel Economy (+20% More MPG!)
  • Increased Life Expectancy Of Engine

Our EGR Delete (EGR Removal) option is very affordable here at Sinspeed, for a quote today just call us on 0203 815 9441.

Blanking EGR / EGR Removal SessionWill this cause me to fail an MOT?
No, the EGR valve system is not a requirement for the MOT. Removing the EGR can in fact improve carbon emissions of the vehicle so it could in actual fact help to improve the vehicles emissions providing the EGR Removal (EGR Delete) session has been carried out professionally. We manually download the ECU data and scan through the 1000’s of data strings to manually de-activate the entire EGR system and modify certain parameters to then compensate for the vehicle not having the EGR system active. This will aid a more fuller combustion per cycle of the engine and help maintain better emissions from the vehicle.

Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi Blocked DPF Problems

Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi Complete DPF Removal Solution

Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi Blocked DPF ProblemsVauxhall Insignia DPF Removal
If your Vauxhall Insignia DPF system is blocked or causing problems, we can de-activate it and remove it completely from the vehicle with no future problems guaranteed. Below we have written up an informative article for you, the owner.. so that we can help you make the right choice.

For more information on DPF’s (Diesel Particulate Filters), how they work and our services.. check out our in-depth article on What Is A DPF.

The Vauxhall Insignia when released, came into the UK market at a high price of £25,000 and although we believe it was over priced, it did sell very well. In fact, more than 30,000 Vauxhall Insignia’s were sold to fleets in just 18 months of being launched. It is a very well designed and practical car with plenty of engine power from the 2.0CDTi and spacious enough to be used for taxi’s as well – they are also very fuel efficient.

We’ve done our research on this car because it’s one we were a bit particular about. We liked it a lot and couldn’t really find much else wrong with it. After doing our research, we found there aren’t any major common faults to worry about with this car – Other than the obvious Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – but once that’s removed, it is a great car to keep.

Vauxhall Insignia Blocked DPF
Unfortunately there is the one major fault as with almost all modern diesel cars now days and that’s the issues with Blocked DPF’s (Diesel Particulate Filters). The Vauxhall Insignia DPF system is no different and is prone to getting blocked up which can of course lead to other problems in the future.

When the Vauxhall Insignia DPF gets blocked, the excess back pressure makes its’ way back to the turbocharger and can cause “backspin” which will damage the turbo charger unit. Once the seals on the turbocharger fail, the unit will begin leaking oil into the inlet which will then also coat the EGR valve system in oil. The back pressure can make it’s way back up to the engine and cause some real major issues when the crank case over pressurises. We’ve seen it all:

  • Blown / Leaking Turbocharger
  • Injector Seals
  • Seized Engine
  • Over Pressurised Crank Case
  • Carbon Backup
  • Damaged EGT Sensors (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors)

The longer you leave the DPF unit blocked on your Vauxhall Insignia, the worse things become and the more costly the repairs get.

Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi DPF IssuesVauxhall Insignia Blocked DPF Solutions
If your Vauxhall Insignia DPF is blocked, you have a few options however obviously we only recommend a removal as it is by far the most inexpensive money saving option with a lifetime fix. You can have the DPF filter regenerated and although we can do this for you as well, we no longer offer this service because we consider it a waste of money. Once the filter is blocked up beyond the point where it can naturally regenerate, we feel it is pointless to forcefully regenerate the unit because the problem will not go away, it will eventually come back. You will either have to change your driving style to suit the DPF model Vauxhall Insignia or change the vehicle for a non-dpf model.

You can fit a replacement filter to the vehicle and this will cure the problem but we only recommend new genuine parts, not second-hand used parts and not copy / aftermarket parts. They will not be manufactured to the same standards, regardless of whether or not they say OEM specification, they will not last as long as a genuine part. Of course, there is a massive price difference but we’ve had customers spend £300 on a copy part from parts suppliers and then 6 months later come to us asking us to offer a DPF removal because their first option wasn’t successful.

The last option is one we recommend. If your Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi DPF is blocked – we recommend having the entire DPF system professionally removed from the vehicle. Once you have your DPF Removed, not only will the problems be rectified for the life of the vehicle, you will not experience any more DPF related problems in the future (because it’s no longer existing) but you will also gain an increase in performance and fuel economy.

Vauxhall Insignia DPF Removals
We offer a bespoke and completely custom 4-stage DPF removal session for all Vauxhall Insignia customers. This will consist of both the calibration of the vehicle electronics system to de-activate the DPF electronically and also remove the entire DPF physically from the vehicle as well. This will ensure no more fault codes, no more warning lights, no more loss of power and no more problems.

  1. Delete fault codes & reset ECU (Turn off Engine/DPF light)
  2. Physical removal of DPF filter (Removing the blocked DPF completely & permanently)
  3. Custom Sinspeed DPF Removal software – bespoke to your vehicle
  4. Smoke-Correction service – Unique to Sinspeed DPF Removals

Vauxhall Insignia 2.0CDTi DPF RemovalsWhen remapping the Vauxhall Insignia DPF out of the ECU, we do things manually – not with automated softwares. We will download the data from your Vauxhall Insignia Bosch ECU and manually scan through the 1000′s of data strings to remove & modify all DPF related data strings. Some of the data strings for the DPF system will be interlinked with other sensors such as EGT sensors (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors), EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), Lambda/o2/Oxygen Sensor and so on. Automated softwares will attempt to delete all data strings and by doing so, will delete partial sensor related data strings as well causing data corruption which may not always be apparent immediately after having the DPF removed. In fact, you may not realise there are problems for up to 250 miles until the ECU stores a permanent fault code and shuts down in to SAFE MODE (Limp Home Mode).

We only offer DPF removals with a 100% success rate, a life time software warranty and a no-smoke guarantee thanks to our Smoke-Correction Service. To find out more about our smoke-correction service, please check out our smoke-correction article.

Removing the DPF will not cause your vehicle to smoke excessively, we can guarantee this. It will not bring up any error messages and the car will not go into LIMP mode. Also, you will never experience any Regeneration messages where the ECU normally attempts to clean the DPF – this is because the DPF is no longer existing.

Finally, you will experience an overall increase in performance, smoothing out any flat spots and safeguard the life of both your engine & turbocharger.

Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi DPF Problems

Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi DPF Removal Service

Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi DPF ProblemsVauxhall Vectra DPF Removal
Much like the DPF Removal service on the Vauxhall Zafira and Vauxhall Combo, we offer the same DPF removal service for the Vauxhall Vectra. They share the same DPF system and so the same weaknesses.  If you own a modern diesel Vauxhall then you may be aware of the problems experienced by 100’s of motorists nationwide.

For more information on DPF’s (Diesel Particulate Filters), how they work and our services.. check out our in-depth article on What Is A DPF.

Having DPF Problems With Your Vauxhall Vectra?
The majority of our customers who come to us with blocked DPF problems on the Vauxhall Vectra tell us that they are using the vehicle for local commuting and taxi driving in built up areas – mainly in and around London/M25. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) requires very high temperatures for prolonged periods of time in order to self-clean via a process called DPF Regeneration.

If you are using the vehicle for regular local commuting and stop/start traffic driving and short journeys then the DPF system will not reach the optimum temperatures for long enough periods and so will fail to self-clean and fail to perform successful DPF Regenerations. – This is why the DPF gets blocked up.

When the Vauxhall Vectra DPF gets blocked, it is critical to get the problem resolved – sooner rather than later. If the DPF is left blocked and you continue to drive like this, then the excess back pressure can cause further issues such as some of the following:

  • Turbo Damage (Seals & Bearings)
  • Carbon Backup
  • Injector Seals
  • Over Pressurised Crank Case
  • Engine Seals Failure
  • Blocked / Damaged EGR Valve

To avoid expensive problems, it is highly recommended that if you experience any DPF related problems, you should have the faults diagnosed and rectified immediately.

My Vauxhall Vectra DPF Is Blocked – What Are My Options?
If your Vauhall Vectra DPF is blocked up, then you have two options – either replace the filter with a new genuine part or have it professionally removed. We do not recommend having the DPF forcefully regenerated because carrying out forced regenerations does put excess strain on the injectors having to squirt diesel at high pressure for prolonged periods of time to reach optimal temperatures in order to aid a successful DPF Regeneration – even if it is successful, it is almost guaranteed that the problem will persist or at least come back in the future.
A new genuine filter replacement can be very costly, a typical DPF filter replacement can cost as much as £1500 +VAT (+Labour). It would only be recommended to regenerate the DPF forcefully by taking to your local dealership if you’re planning to sell the vehicle to someone with a more suited driving style or change your own driving style – otherwise it really will be a waste of time and money.

Vauxhall Vectra Blocked DPF SolutionsHow Do You Remove My Vauxhall Vectra DPF?
We offer a completely bespoke & custom DPF Removal solution which saves breaking the bank. In fact, the entire process from start to finish costs a fraction of the price of a replacement filter alone and our guarantees are second to none. We operate a 4-stage custom DPF removal session which consists of the following:

  1. Delete fault codes & reset ECU (Turn off Engine/DPF light)
  2. Physical removal of DPF filter (Removing the blocked DPF completely & permanently)
  3. Custom Sinspeed DPF Removal software – bespoke to your vehicle
  4. Smoke-Correction service – Unique to Sinspeed DPF Removals

Because our DPF Removal software is custom and bespoke to your vehicle, we guarantee a 100% success rate. We download the files from the vehicles on-board computer (ECU) and then manually scan through the 1000’s of data strings to modify and delete all DPF related data strings. Some data strings for the DPF system may be interlinked with other sensors such as:

  • EGT Sensors (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors)
  • Lambda / o2 / Oxygen Sensors
  • EGR System (Exhaust Gas Recirculation System)

In such cases, we will modify the data strings to remove the DPF settings whilst leaving the other sensors and systems in tact and fully functional. The difference here is that many other companies are using automated softwares which will accidentally delete these data strings and this is where problems occur in the future.

We only offer DPF removals with a 100% success rate, a life time software warranty and a free Smoke-Correction Service. To find out more about our smoke-correction service, please check out our smoke-correction article.

Removing the DPF will will not bring up any error messages and the car will not go into LIMP mode. Also, you will never experience any Regeneration messages where the ECU normally attempts to clean the DPF – this is because the DPF is no longer existing.

Finally, you will experience an overall increase in performance, smoothing out any flat spots and safeguard the life of both your engine & turbocharger.

Will DPF Removal Cause Me To Fail An MOT?
From February 2014, the law is changing to include the visual inspection of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) during your MOT inspection. Although our DPF Removals are very discreet and our smoke-correction ensures the vehicle won’t smoke come MOT time, we are offering our DPF Removal sessions as an “Off-Road Use Only” service.
