Sanden PXE16 Air Conditioning (Aircon) Compressor – Audi

Audi Sanden PXE16 Aircon Compressor ProblemsAir Conditioning Compressor Problems
The Sanden PXE16 air conditioning compressor (aircon pump) has been known to be a very common failing part on Audi’s, and it is also one of our best sellers as this common failing aircon pump is fitted to a wide range of Audi’s. If you are the proud owner of an Audi, you will have noticed that when the aircon pump fails, it just completely stops working. You will rarely notice any change in the sound of the engine running or any warning lights on the dashboard, and you will notice the fault when you go to turn the aircon on and realise that there is no cold air coming through the vents.

Reason For Common Pump Failure
After receiving countless Sanden PXE16 air compressor units at our garage which have failed due to a lack of lubrication within the mechanical unit and with it being such a wide-spread problem, I think it’s safe to say it is a manufacturing defect. An air conditioning compressor never just fails – there is always a root cause to why the aircon pump would stop working and in this unfortunate case it is a costly manufactured defect.

Many other dealers may have acknowledged this fault, but whether or not they will replace it under an extended warranty in goodwill is questionable.

We have noticed that the issue has been with the lack of lubrication within the aircon pump which has eventually caused metal fatigue. Over time, this has resulted in the compressor shaft snapping, but unfortunately the problem gets worse. With the aircon pump damaged, the rubbing of the broken shaft causes very fine metal particles to break off, which is also known as swarf. This leads to the swarf getting in to the entire air conditioning system and causing pipes, valves and filters to block up.

Unfortunately due to the nature of this air conditioning compressor failure, it is not just a simple task of replacing the pump and refilling the aircon gas. The aircon expansion valve (TXV Valve) and dryer unit will need to be replaced as they get blocked up in all cases. You will also be required to flush the air conditioning system for at least 4 hours to ensure that all residue of swarf is removed prior to fitting the new parts.
