If you’ve got a Ford Transit van, Transit Connect or even the Ford Tourneo Connect van from 2000 – 2006 then it may well be fitted with the Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump, which I’m afraid to say is a very common failing part. We see several of these units being sent in to us each week for repair, so if your Ford Diesel Pump has developed then you’ve come to the right place.

This particular diesel pump is designed with the Electronic Control Module, namely the Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) unit mounted to the top of the diesel pump with wires fixed into the unit, making it difficult to separate. A majority of the time it is the EDC unit which fails on these diesel pumps and not the mechanical components themselves.

The Bosch EDC module has been manufactured using Hybrid technology and is extremely delicate. Just opening the unit without experience can cause damage and some of the main components are very susceptible to shock and vibration.

Replacement diesel pumps are very expensive and a dealer will quote you in excess of £900 for a new replacement unit which would require additional programming and come with 12 months warranty. Some workshops may recommend cheaper alternatives such as second-hand used parts but it would still require coding and come with a limited 30-90 day warranty. Also there’s really no guarantee how long it would last being a second-hand part as it may have come from a high-mileage vehicle or not well maintained.

Mercedes Comand 2.0 RepairsThe Mercedes CLK (W209) chassis does come with the optional Comand 2.0 High-Line Sat Nav unit. This unit has also been found fitted to the W208 and W210 chassis but possibly retro-fit as we’ve not confirmed whether Mecedes did fit these at factory to such models.

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is definitely the most problematic part fitted to almost all new diesel vehicles. The DPF filter sits in the exhaust and is designed to trap diesel particles (particulate soot matter) and stop it from escaping out the back of the exhaust and entering into our atmosphere. The Bosch VP44 (PSG5) Diesel Pump is a very common failing part and found fitted to a variety of vehicles including the Ford range of Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo’s manufactured between 2000 and 2005. This particular design has the Diesel Pump ECU / EDC (Electronic Diesel Control Unit) mounted to the top of the hydraulic / mechanical diesel pump unit.

Inside the EDC Bosch is using hybrid technology to control the pressure and flow of the diesel pump but with it being mounted to the top of the mechanical unit it is subjected to heat and vibration which are too common known causes of premature failure for internal components.

Common EDC Failure Problems / Symptoms
The EDC can fail in many ways and the fault symptoms can vary quite a bit from having just the engine light illuminated on the dashboard to breaking down and having a complete non-starter. Below we’ve listed some of the common faults we’ve seen from customers sending EDC units in for repair.

If your Diesel Pump EDC has failed then your local dealer will probably be quoting you for a very expensive replacement of the complete unit with additional costs for labour and coding / programming. This is because the EDC unit is not available to purchase as a separate part to the Diesel Pump. The new replacement part will require coding and will only come with a limited 12 month warranty. The alternative option would be to replace your diesel pump with a second-hand used part for much less but the unit will come with a limited 30-90 day warranty and also require coding / programming.

The automatic transmission fitted to VAG group vehicles, namely Audi / Seat / Skoda and Volkswagen (VW) are very commonly known for becoming faulty and causing all sorts of transmission related problems. All vehicles are affected from automatics to semi-automatics.. from Mechatronic, Multitronic and S-Tronic right down to DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) and CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) vehicles.

Sometimes these faults can be corrected by a simple Gearbox oil change or software update but more commonly the fault is caused by the Transmission Control Module (TCM), also known as the Gearbox ECU.

Common DSG / CVT Transmission Controller Problems
A failed Transmission Control Unit (TCU) can cause a wide number of faults. Some faults can be intermittent or become progressively worse depending on the nature of the fault but can almost always be repaired. Below we have listed some of the most common faults our customers have experienced with their failed DSG / CVT Transmission Controllers.

The Vauxhall/Opel service literature defines C0131 as an ABS brake-pressure-sensor circuit malfunction — the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) has detected a fault in the circuit of the sensor that reports how hard the brakes are being applied. Once the module can no longer trust that pressure reading, it logs the code and warns the driver.

What makes C0131 distinctive on these cars is where that sensor lives. On the modern Vauxhall and Opel range the brake-pressure sensor is not a separate part bolted onto the brake lines — it is built inside the MK60 ATE ABS pump and modulator, as part of the combined hydraulic and electronic unit. So although the code reads as a sensor circuit fault, the sensor that has failed is integral to the pump, which is why C0131 is described as both an ABS pump fault and a brake-pressure sensor fault — both point at the same physical unit.

Because the pressure sensor feeds the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), the most visible result is the ESP and traction-control warning staying lit — the yellow car with skid-marks beneath it — frequently with the ABS and handbrake warning lights alongside it. The code turns up across much of the post-2004 Vauxhall/Opel range, because those cars share the same style of internal-sensor ABS unit, and that internal sensor is exactly the part that fails.

Symptoms of C0131

C0131 usually announces itself on the dashboard, and because it sits in the braking and stability system those warnings are worth acting on rather than waiting to see whether they clear. The signs we see most often are:

  • The ESP / traction-control warning light on and staying on — the yellow car with skid-marks below it — rather than flickering and clearing on its own.
  • The ESP-OFF button having no effect: pressing it will not turn the light out, which is one of the clearest pointers to C0131 rather than a passing glitch.
  • The ABS warning light, and often the handbrake light, illuminated as well, sitting alongside the ESP light.

  • Braking that feels different on some cars, with the anti-lock and stability assistance no longer intervening as it should and only ordinary braking left in effect.

The tell-tale that points specifically at C0131, rather than a passing warning, is the ESP-OFF button doing nothing. Once the code is stored and the light stays on, the safe assumption is that a braking-stability system has dropped offline, so the car should be diagnosed promptly rather than driven on indefinitely.

What causes C0131? The MK60 ATE internal brake-pressure-sensor design flaw

C0131 is, at root, a design weakness rather than bad luck. On earlier Vauxhall and Opel ABS systems the brake-pressure sensor was mounted externally — on the side of the ABS pump, on the brake master cylinder, on the servo, or along the feed pipe between the master cylinder and the pump. In that position the sensor rarely gave trouble. If it ever did fail, it could simply be unbolted and replaced on its own.

On modern Vauxhall and Opel cars built from around 2004 onwards, the MK60 ATE ABS pump moved that sensor inside the unit. It was a space-saving design change, and it is the change that causes the problem. Sealed inside the pump body and exposed to the heat and electrical load of the assembly around it, the internal pressure sensor breaks down in service in a way the older external-sensor design did not. C0131-00 vs C0131-5A and related brake-pressure codes

C0131 turns up with more than one sub-type, and the suffix tells you how the module saw the fault — but both common variants point at the same brake-pressure-sensor circuit inside the ABS pump.

C0131-00 — sometimes written C0131 SYM00 — is the headline form: a straightforward brake-pressure sensor circuit malfunction. This is the code most owners and garages read off the scanner. C0131-5A is the plausibility variant: the EBCM has decided the traction-control-system pressure-circuit signal is no longer plausible — in other words the brake-pressure reading it is receiving does not make sense against what the rest of the system expects. The wording differs, but the part in question is the same: the brake-pressure sensor circuit built into the MK60 ATE unit. If your car has logged C0131-5A, the sensible step is the same as for C0131-00 — have the unit read and tested to confirm it.

C0131 also sits within a wider family of brake-pressure DTCs that the Vauxhall/Opel ABS diagnostics group together — the C0131 to C0139 range, all of which relate to the brake-pressure circuit. C0136, for example, is defined as a base brake-system pressure circuit fault. We mention the family only so the codes are recognisable; we will not put a definition against the codes in between, because the head fault on these cars — and the one this page is about — is C0131 itself: the internal brake-pressure sensor that the MK60 ATE unit is known for.

How C0131 is diagnosed (the checks)

Because C0131 reports a sensor that is built into the ABS pump, the job on diagnosis is to confirm the fault really is the internal pressure sensor — and not something masquerading as it — then to put the unit right rather than simply clear the code. In practice that means confirming the module communicates on the diagnostic line, checking the brake-pressure-sensor circuit along with its wiring and earth so a damaged loom or connector is not blamed on the sensor, and then bench-testing the unit itself. You cannot tell any of that from the dashboard alone, which is why the pump is properly tested. Can you drive with C0131?

Treat C0131 as a reason to have the car checked rather than to carry on regardless. With the fault stored, the ESP and traction-control systems are not doing their job — the stability system has lost the brake-pressure reading it depends on — and you should take real care, because the safety assistance you would normally rely on is not there.

On ordinary roads at ordinary speeds a Vauxhall or Opel with C0131 may feel much as it always does, and your standard brakes will still slow the car. What you lose is the layer that works hardest when it matters most: under heavy or emergency braking, on a slippery surface, or in a sudden swerve, the anti-lock and stability functions cannot intervene as they are designed to — precisely when you would want them.

Can C0131 be repaired, or does the ABS unit need replacing?

Most main dealers and general garages answer C0131 with a complete new ABS pump and module, because replacing the unit is the only route open to them. A specialist remanufacturer can repair the unit at component level instead, and that changes the answer — in the great majority of cases C0131 is a repair, not a replacement.

There is a deeper problem with simply fitting another unit. A brand-new replacement is built to the same design as the one that failed, with the same pressure sensor in the same internal position — so it carries the same design fault and can go on to develop the very same C0131 in the future. A used or salvage unit is a bigger gamble still: it may already be on its way to failing, and it usually has to be coded to your car first. Either way, a like-for-like swap does not address the root cause; it just resets the clock on it.

If you have got the brake pressure sensor ESP fault with your car then you will notice that the ESP button will be illuminated or the ESP light will be lit on the dash and pressing the ESP button will have no affect. The ABS light may also be illuminated and when you have a diagnostic machine plugged into the vehicle, it will bring a fault code similar to below:

The Bosch 5.3 ABS Pump Controller also controls the traction control (ESP) system and is a very common failing part and found fitted to a wide range of vehicles from 1994 to 2006. The ABS Pump has many names and is often referred to as: ABS Pump, ABS ECU, ABS Module, ABS Controller, ESP Pump, ESP ECU, ESP Module and ESP Controller – In instances like this when the ABS / ESP systems are combined, they are all referring to the same one unit.

The Bosch 5.3 ABS Controller has an external power source to the ABS pump motor which is mounted on top of the hydraulic valve block. The ABS unit has since been upgraded on newer vehicles with the Bosch 5.7 and now the Bosch 8.0 ABS pump which has an internal power source to feed power up to the ABS pump motor.

Common Bosch 5.3 ABS Pump Faults
Faults with this type of unit can very quite a bit from vehicle to vehicle and it all depends on how the unit has failed. We’ve been repairing these units for so long now we’ve practically seen every type of fault possible with Bosch ABS controllers and below are just some of the most common faults we’ve seen when the ABS pump fails:

Second hand used ABS controllers are not recommended because they come with a limited 30-90 day warranty and being such a common failing part there is no real guarantee how long it will last – also the second hand used part will also require reprogramming at an additional cost.
