Summary: A Ford Fiesta 1.4 Durashift that sticks in gear, will not select a gear or loses the gear from its display usually has a failing clutch actuator, gear actuator, or both. These are the two units on the gearbox that do the work of a clutch pedal and a gear lever, each reporting its position back to the gearbox ECU. Your garage takes the faulty unit off and posts it to us; we bench-test it, repair it and send it back ready to refit, with no re-coding and a lifetime warranty.
Both actuators are covered here, for the Fiesta 1.4 and the Durashift Fusion, along with the codes, the faults that imitate them and the mail-in route. Automated-gearbox actuators for other makes are gathered in our clutch and gear actuator repairs hub.
- The parts: a clutch actuator and a gear shift actuator on the Durashift gearbox, both directed by the gearbox ECU
- Typical signs: stuck in gear, gears not selecting, jumping out of gear, a blank or flashing gear display
- Codes to note: P0810, plus P1600, P1607, P1608, P1732 and P1735
- Cars: Fiesta Mk6 1.4 and Fusion with Durashift
- The service: your garage removes the faulty actuator and posts it; we test, repair and return it
- On refit: no re-coding, because it is your own unit
- Warranty: lifetime, on every Fiesta actuator we repair
What do the clutch and gear actuators do on a Fiesta 1.4?
The Fiesta 1.4 Durashift is an automated manual: a conventional clutch and gearbox, operated for you. There is no clutch pedal, and the driver can switch between letting the car change gear and changing manually.

Three parts share the job. The clutch actuator engages and releases the clutch. The gear shift actuator selects each gear. The gearbox ECU, also called the transmission control unit, decides what both should do, using the position each actuator reports back along with road speed and other inputs.
That feedback is where faults bite. The ECU only knows which gear is engaged and where the clutch sits because the actuators tell it. When an actuator stops moving accurately, or stops reporting accurately, the ECU is acting on bad information, and a small unit bolted to the outside of the gearbox can leave the whole car stuck.
What are the signs of a failing Fiesta clutch or gear actuator?
The signs of a failing actuator on a Fiesta 1.4:
- Jumping out of gear while driving
- Stuck in one gear, sometimes with the car refusing to restart once it has been switched off
- Gears that will not select
- A gear display that goes blank, shows a dash or flashes N
- A transmission fault warning on the instrument cluster
A Fiesta that will not restart is easily blamed on the battery or the starter motor, when the gearbox system can be the cause.
Read the codes before anything comes off. P0810 is the generic code for a clutch position control error: the clutch position the system commanded and the position reported back no longer agree. P1600, P1607, P1608, P1732 and P1735 are the other codes we have logged on these cars; they are manufacturer-specific, so record the wording exactly as your scan tool gives it.
Our guides to clutch actuator fault codes and clutch actuator fault symptoms go further into both.
Why do Fiesta Durashift actuators fail?
They never get a rest. With no clutch pedal, every pull-away, gear change and stop is actuator movement, and in automatic mode the gear shift is too. Short urban journeys, full of stopping and starting, pile that work up fastest.

They ride on the gearbox. Mounted on the casing, both actuators warm up with the engine and gearbox and cool again after every trip. That constant swing in temperature is hard on any unit that has to stay precise.
The road reaches them. On the gearbox they are shaken constantly and reached by water, salt and road grime, and a connector that corrodes or works loose changes what the ECU hears from them.
Reported position wanders. As an actuator ages, the position it reports and the position it actually reaches drift apart. The ECU compensates within its limits; beyond them the faults above begin, and on the clutch side P0810 is a common result.
Clutch actuator, gear actuator, TCU or clutch: which has failed?
Several parts of the Durashift can produce the same complaint, and the control unit is easy to overlook. The faults listed on our Mazda 2 Durashift TCU repair page, from gears not selecting correctly to no gear shown on the dash, read almost exactly like an actuator fault, and that same Bosch unit is fitted to selected Fiestas.

| Symptom | If it is an actuator | If it is something else |
|---|---|---|
| P0810, with slipping or a late bite | The clutch actuator not reaching, or not reporting, the commanded position | A worn clutch, or the wiring between actuator and ECU |
| Gears not selecting, or jumping out | The gear shift actuator | The TCU not commanding the change correctly |
| Gear display blank or flashing | Either actuator reporting a position the ECU cannot use | The TCU itself, or lost communication with it |
| Stuck in gear, will not restart | A failed actuator leaving the gearbox in gear | A battery or starting fault unrelated to the gearbox |
A worn clutch needs ruling out as well: fit a repaired actuator to a clutch at the end of its life and the complaint can come straight back. If the car simply refuses a gear, our guide to why a car won’t go into gear covers the causes outside the actuators.
The bench settles it. Every actuator we receive is tested on its own before any work starts, so you learn whether it has failed instead of guessing from the symptom. If it passes, we tell you and point you to the likelier culprit, and if that turns out to be the TCU, we repair those too.

Which cars have the Durashift gearbox?
Durashift was not only a Fiesta gearbox. These are the cars it was fitted to, plus one later Ford that looks similar and is a different job:
| Car | Gearbox | Where it is covered |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Fiesta Mk6 1.4 | Durashift automated manual | This page |
| Ford Fusion | Durashift automated manual | This page: send us the actuator’s part number and we will confirm the match |
| Mazda 2 (DY) | Durashift automated manual, with a Bosch control unit shared with selected Fiestas | Send us the actuator’s part number to confirm it fits; the control unit is on the Mazda 2 TCU page above |
| Ford Fiesta Mk7 PowerShift | DPS6 dual-clutch automatic | Ford Focus PowerShift clutch actuator repair |
The PowerShift is not a newer Durashift but a twin-clutch automatic with a different pair of clutch actuators, and its page covers them for the Fiesta as well as the Focus.
Badges are only a guide. Put the part number from the actuator’s label on the repair form if you have it; otherwise the registration lets us confirm the unit.
Repair your Fiesta’s actuators, or replace them?
A main dealer’s answer to a failed actuator is usually a replacement.
- A new actuator must be coded. Each one has to be coded to the car before it will work, which brings dealer equipment and labour into the job, and it normally comes with a 12-month warranty.
- It is the same design. A new unit carries the weak points that wore out the original and starts wearing them again from the day it is fitted.
- Your own actuator, repaired, goes back on with no re-coding at all. We confirm its fault on the bench before touching it and prove the repair the same way afterwards, strengthening the known weak points in between, and it leaves with a lifetime warranty.
One step belongs to any refit, new or repaired: if your garage’s diagnostic equipment offers a clutch-point learn for the Fiesta, it is worth running once the actuator is back on. That is a fitting step, not coding.
How does the Fiesta actuator repair work?
- Fill in the repair form
Give us the registration, the symptoms, every stored code and the actuator you suspect. If the codes leave it open, we will say whether to send one unit or both.
- Your garage removes and posts it
Your garage unbolts the actuator from the gearbox, boxes it securely with the connector protected, and adds a note with your name and registration.
- We confirm the fault
Your actuator is connected to one of our Hardware-in-the-Loop rigs, which simulate life on a running gearbox: hot, shaken and under load. We record exactly how it misbehaves before a single repair is made.
- Repaired and proven
The repair is carried out in-house in an ESD-safe, cleanroom-standard area. The unit is then calibrated with dealer-level equipment and must pass the same test it failed before it is boxed up.
- Refitted, no coding
The actuator returns to your garage needing no re-coding. They bolt it on, clear the stored codes and, where their equipment offers it, run the clutch-point learn.
Ford Fiesta clutch actuator repair: FAQs
Is it the clutch actuator or the gear actuator on my Fiesta?
The symptoms usually lean one way. Slipping, a late bite or P0810 point towards the clutch actuator; gears that will not select or jump out point towards the gear shift actuator. Both can fail together, so let the codes and the bench test decide rather than the symptom alone.
Can I keep driving a Durashift that sticks in gear?
It is not worth the risk. A Fiesta in this state can lose drive or refuse to restart without warning, which can leave you stranded in traffic. Have it recovered, or taken straight to a garage.
Does a repaired Fiesta actuator need coding?
No. Coding is needed when a replacement actuator is fitted. Your own actuator comes back to the car it came from, so there is nothing to code; the only step after refitting is the clutch-point learn, where your garage’s equipment offers it.
Do you repair the Ford Fusion Durashift actuator too?
Yes. The Fusion was also offered with Durashift, and we repair its clutch and gear actuators in the same way. Send the part number from the actuator’s label, or the registration, and we will confirm the unit before it is posted.
Can my garage post the actuator to you?
Yes. Any garage can take the actuator off a Fiesta 1.4, post it to us from anywhere in the UK and refit it when it comes back repaired. Your Fiesta stays where it is.
Will a new clutch cure my Durashift fault?
Only if the clutch is the worn part. A new clutch fitted to a car with a failing actuator leaves the fault in place, and the reverse is also true. Have the actuators tested before the clutch is condemned, or alongside it.

Final thoughts
A Fiesta 1.4 stuck in gear feels like a gearbox on its way out. Often the fault lies with the clutch actuator or the gear actuator instead, and either can be repaired and refitted without a new unit or any coding.
Have the codes read and the clutch checked, then tell us what you found. If an actuator is at fault, your garage sends it in and it comes back repaired, tested and ready to bolt on.
