BMW Turbocharger Actuator Repairs

BMW X3 2.0D (E83) Electronic Turbo Actuator Repairs

BMW Turbocharger Actuator RepairsBMW X3 Turbo Actuator faults
The BMW X3 2.0D from 2004 to 2007 is fitted with an electronic turbo actuator, which is designed to accurately control the flow and output of the turbocharger. The actuator is controlled by the Engine ECU and the parameters of the ECU can be adjusted to change the way the actuator operates. If tuned correctly, you can decrease the spool up time of the turbocharger and simultaneously increase the power and economy of the vehicle.

Electronic turbo actuators are very common failing parts and are not sold separately from the turbo. So when the electronic turbo actuator does fail, you are quoted by the dealers for a complete replacement turbocharger + actuator together. Used parts are not recommended due to how common the actuator failure is and also used parts will require coding to the vehicle at an additional cost.

BMW X3 Electronic Turbo Actuator Failure Symptoms
A faulty turbo actuator can sometimes be very easy to diagnose, however sometimes the diagnostic equipment can point you in the direction of a boost pressure sensor or give descriptions like “Boost Leak Detected”. Therefore it is necessary to ensure you thoroughly diagnose the problem before you start replacing components. Below is a short list of common failure symptoms we see with the electronic turbocharger actuator.

  • Loss of power under acceleration
  • Intermittent loss of power under acceleration
  • Smoking on acceleration
  • Fault codes pointing to turbo actuator
  • “Charge Air Pressure Control” fault
  • Actuator arm not moving

The most common part numbers associated with the BMW X3 Electronic Turbo Actuator are: 712120 & 6NW008412.

The electronic turbo actuator is designed to accurately control the output of the turbocharger and has proven to be much more efficient than older vacuum controlled actuators. The electronic actuator is controlled by the Engine ECU and the parameters can be adjusted electronically to make very precise changes that can help improve the power and efficiency of the vehicle – by reducing turbo spool time and increasing boost pressure.

Failure of the electronic turbo actuator is extremely common and we now carry some of the most common failing part numbers in stock. Below we have compiled a shortlist of part numbers we’re seeing frequently in our workshops.

Common BMW Turbo Actuator Problems
Often a faulty turbo actuator can be mis-diagnosed as a faulty boost pressure sensor. This is an extremely common failing part and below are some of the most common failure symptoms we see on an almost daily basis:

  • Loss of power under acceleration
  • Intermittent loss of power under acceleration
  • Smoking on acceleration
  • Fault codes pointing to turbo actuator
  • “Charge Air Pressure Control” fault
  • Actuator arm not moving

BMW Turbocharger Actuator RebuildsIf your vehicle has been diagnosed with a faulty turbocharger actuator then you may have been quoted a very high cost to replace the complete turbocharger as the actuator is not usually sold as a separate part. Used actuators are available in the market place but you have to ensure you’re matching up all the part numbers with your unit and the used part will only come with a limited 30-90 days warranty. Used parts also require coding when fitting to your vehicle which is an additional cost and the used part may not last long at all because this is such a common failing part.

BMW 5 Series Electronic Turbo Actuator Repairs – By Sinspeed
We have an isolated testing environment used to fully bench test electronic turbo actuators. We can fully bench test, strip down and inspect all units to a component level and we do this before and after repairs to ensure they are fully functional before being returned to the customer. We use new genuine OEM components when rebuilding an actuator and where possible we up rate components to further strengthen the unit and eliminate any known weaknesses. All remanufactured turbo actuators are returned with a Lifetime warranty and will not require coding when refitting to the vehicle.

Professional diagnosis & fitting services available.

On the plus side, the electronic turbo actuator is the most accurate way to control the boost output of the turbocharger because the actuator is being controlled by the engine ECU. By tuning the ECU, adjustments can be made to improve the turbo spool up times as well as increasing the efficiency of the turbo / engine which in turn will increase the power and economy of the vehicle. The downside is that the turbo actuator is also a very common failing part and we’re seeing these daily from all sorts of vehicles being sent in for testing and repair.

Below we have compiled a short list of part numbers for turbo actuators we’ve found fitted to the BMW 3 series.

Denso 7SB16C Aircon Compressor

Denso 7SB16C Air Conditioning Compressor – Audi

Denso 7SB16C Aircon CompressorAudi Air Conditioning Compressor
The Denso 7SB16C is a compressor unit which is found fitted to early Audi’s and in fact a variety of VAG cars manufactured between 1995 – 2008. We stock the Denso 7SB16C aircon pump both as a brand new genuine OEM part and also it’s aftermarket equivalent. Both options come with a full 12 month warranty and guaranteed to save you money.

Audi Aircon Pump Problems
Air conditioning compressors very rarely fail due to old age, in fact we’ve often enough seen a good compressor outlive the vehicle it’s fitted to, it all comes down to how well it is maintained. Below are just some of the common problems known around this type of air conditioning compressor:

  • Grinding Noise When Pressing Aircon Button
  • Compressor Clutch Not Engaging
  • Electrical Faults
  • No Cold Air (Even After Re-filling Aircon Gas)
  • Unable to Discharge Gas
  • Unable to Refill Gas
  • Pressure Problems

Replacing a failed compressor could end up costing you in excess of £500 +Vat just for the part alone and then there is the labour and re-gassing to add to that. The cheaper alternative is usually a second hand part but it’s never advised as you cannot say for sure how well it was maintained, if it is in any better condition then yours and how long it will last – used parts generally only come with 30-90 days warranty as well.

New Replacement Compressors + Own Unit Rebuilds by Sinspeed
We stock almost every air conditioning compressor for every make and model of vehicle. Our air conditioning engineers are also capable of stripping down and rebuilding some of the most common failing compressors. We use new genuine OEM components when rebuilding a compressor to ensure it meets & exceeds OE specifications. All of our repaired air conditioning pumps are returned with a 12 month warranty.

We stock brand new genuine units and OE equivalent aftermarket units which are almost manufactured to meet & exceed OE specifications. They too come with our standard 12 month manufacturer warranty, so whatever option you go for – we’ve got you covered!

Alfa Romeo Mito Electric Power Steering Column Problems

Alfa Romeo MiTo EPS Electric Power Steering Column Repairs

Alfa Romeo Mito Electric Power Steering Column ProblemsAlfa Romeo Mito Electric Power Steering Column
The EPS column on the Alfa Romeo Mito has been known to be a common failing part, even though the earlier conventional hydraulic power steering system were replaced with the new electric steering column to reduce the number of problems. While the new design is quieter and has improved fuel economy as well as a noticable difference in handling and steering refinement, it is still known to be a common failure, and usually still ends up failing, resulting in the need for either a repair or a replacement.

Alfa Romeo Electric Steering Column FaultsAlfa Romeo Mito Electric Steering Column – Common Faults
Some indications of a faulty Electric Power Steering column include intermittent faults where the steering light is illuminated on the dashboard but then disappears itself, and in this time, the steering can become heavy in either one or both directions. If the issue is not diagnosed early enough, it can cause the power steering column to fail completely which will result in the steering light remaining permanently illuminated on the dashboard with completely heavy steering and no power assistance. These columns can be extremely expensive to replace, costing anywhere in the excess of £800 + VAT (plus labour + coding), therefore, it is always advised that a full diagnosis is carried out to ensure that parts are not replaced unnecessarily.

If you take your vehicle to a local garage, they will connect diagnostic machine through the OBD port, and below are some of the most common fault codes that could appear from the Power Steering Module:

C1001 – Rear Left External Sensor
C1002 – Steering Column Torque Position

As mentioned above, the costs of replacing your Electric Steering Column can be very expensive especially if you go to the main dealer, and it will only come with a limited 12 Month Warranty. Other options can include opting for a second-hand unit which works out a lot cheaper, however, this can be a riskier option as you will not be aware of the previous vehicles mileage or how well it was maintained. This will generally only come with a 30-90 day limited warranty and there will not be any guarantee that it will last longer than this.

How can Sinspeed help me if my Alfa Romeo Mito Electric Steering Column Is Faulty
Here at Sinspeed, we have remanufactured units in stock as a direct replacement that will come with a Lifetime warranty and which will not require coding and are set to self-calibrate when fitted to the vehicle. We generally attempt to repair your own unit, and we do this using only genuine OEM components when rebuilding your Electric Steering Column, to ensure that it meets & exceeds OE specifications. All our repaired and exchanged electric steering columns will come with Lifetime warranty and will require no coding.

If you have a problem with your Alfa Romeo Mito Electric Steering Column, give Sinspeed a call today on 0203 815 9441 for a quote!

Renault Megane PAS Electric Steering Column Faults

Renault Megane Mk2 Electric Power Steering Column Repair Service

Renault Megane PAS Electric Steering Column FaultsRenault Megane Electric Power Steering
The Electric Power Steering Column in the Renault Megane has been known to fail and is one of the most queried repairs here at Sinspeed. It is most common on the Meganes from 2002 – 2009, and although the new Electric Power Steering system replaced the hydraulic system which was found fitted to earlier models, when faulty it can be a very expensive part to replace!

Renault Megane Electric Power Steering Column IssuesCommon Signs of a Faulty Renault Megane EPS Column
If you are finding that your steering has gone heavy in either one direction or both, this is generally a sign that your electric power steering column is failing. This usually starts as an intermittent failure where the steering light momentarily appears on the dash and then goes out itself. At this point, if the problem is not rectified, it can cause the power steering to fail completely in which case the steering light will remain permanently illuminated on the dashboard and the steering goes heavy in both directions with no power assistance.

If you take your vehicle to a local garage, they can confirm the fault codes by connecting diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, which will usually bring up the following 2 common faults:

C1606 – Motor driver malfunction
C1608 – Control Unit Malfunction

In the event that either of the above fault codes have been identified, main dealers can usually quote you in excess of £800 + VAT (plus labour + coding) for a replacement unit, and this will only come with a 12 month limited warranty. The other option available would be to try and get hold of a second hand part which will more than likely be a lot cheaper, however the risk with this option would be that you would not know how long the part would last due to previous car history, and they generally will only come with a limited 30-90 day warranty.

How can Sinspeed help with my faulty Renault Megane Steering Column?
Here at Sinspeed, our remanufactured units are always in stock and come as a direct replacement for your part, and are set to self calibrate when fitted to your vehicle. Not only this, but it also comes with lifetime warranty!

If you require a repair of your own Electric Power Steering Column, Sinspeed will repair this using genuine OEM components to ensure that it meets and exceeds OE specifications. Again this will come with the Lifetime warranty and will not require coding when fitting back to your vehicle! Call us today on 0203 815 9441 for a quote.

Ford Transit Propshaft Problems

Ford Transit Propshaft Repairs

Ford Transit Propshaft ProblemsA Propeller Shaft which is commonly known as the Propshaft, runs along the underside of both Rear Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive cars, to deliver power from the engine / transmission system through to the Differential and onto the wheels. Ford Transits are generally rear wheel drives, therefore are equipped with both a propshaft as well as rear drive shafts.

Common Propshaft Problems
General wear and tear, light bumps or even neglect can trigger concerns with the propshaft which can cause it to become unbalanced. Some of the more common issues that have been found to occur with Ford Transit Propshafts include:

  • Vibrations
  • Knocking / Grinding noises
  • Failed Universal Joint (UJ)
  • Failed Spicer Joint
  • Failed Bearing
  • Unbalanced Propshaft
  • Propshaft Vibrations
  • Propshaft Knocking
  • Propshaft Grinding

Any of the above symptoms can go on to damage the propshaft and a complete replacement could cost between £400.00 – £1200.00 + VAT (depending on the model of the vehicle) from a Ford dealership, and adding labour / fitting on top of that can further increase the costs. Although the genuine part will come directly from Ford and with 12-month warranty, the price of a replacement is usually still unappealing. Aftermarket options are also available as well as second hand units, but the warranty is generally limited and will not be as good quality as the genuine product.

Ignoring a propshaft failure may cause complete loss of drive but if it is caught early on, it does not have to be an expensive fix. As an alternative to the expensive replacement of a propshaft, you can trust us here at Sinspeed, to remanufacture the unit using genuine OEM components, with new joints and bearings and fully rebalance the unit to ensure it meets and exceeds OE specifications. Not only this, but it will also come with 12 month warranty to ensure 100% Customer Satisfaction!

If you have a problem with your Ford Transit Propshaft, give Sinspeed a call today on 0844 8479 999 for further information!

Ford Focus Electric Steering Column Problems

Ford Focus Electric Power Steering Column Repairs

Ford Focus Electric Steering Column ProblemsFord Focus Electric Power Steering Problems
Are you finding that your steering is heavy in both directions on your Ford Focus? Or do you find that there is a loss in Power Steering? If so, it may be due to a fault with your Electric Power Steering Column. Hydraulic systems that were fitted to earlier models were replaced with Electric Steering Columns which work great in concept, however this is an expensive part which is a very common failure and they all end up failing at some point, therefore either requiring repair or replacement.

Ford Focus EPS Column IssuesFord Focus Electric Steering Column – Common Faults
Many of the faults that occur with the Electric Power Steering on a Ford Focus will begin intermittently, and develop in to faults as listed below:

  • Power Steering Light illuminating on the dash
  • Intermittent Loss of Power
  • Complete Loss of Power Steering
  • Heavy Steering in Both Directions

The symptoms above are an indication of a faulty Electric Power Steering Column, and if ignored, it will go on to fail completely. This will cause the steering warning light to remain illuminated on the dash and the steering will go completely heavy with no power assistance.
If the fault is with the Electric Power Steering Column, the options are either to replace or repair. Replacing it with a brand new unit directly from Ford can cost in the region of £000.00 + VAT (Plus Labour + Coding) which is very expensive. You could also opt for a second hand part which in the first instance will seem more viable due to it being cheaper, however the risks involved with this include not knowing how long it will last due to limited knowledge of previous maintenance history, and it will generally only come with a limited 30 – 90 day warranty.

My Ford Focus Electric Power Steering Column Is Faulty – How can Sinspeed Help?
Here at Sinspeed, we can repair your own Electric Steering Column using only genuine OEM components, to ensure each and every rebuilt EPS Unit meets and exceeds OE Specifications. We also hold remanufactured units in stock as a direct replacement, which will not require coding as they are set to self-calibrate when fitted to your vehicle. All units will come with lifetime warranty to ensure 100% satisfaction.

Alfa Romeo HDI EGR Valve Issues

Alfa Romeo EGR Removals

Alfa Romeo HDI EGR Valve IssuesAlfa Romeo EGR Removal
EGR Removal has become a popular choice for many motorists, as it can be very problematic as well as extremely expensive to repair and replace. There are many different reasons why the EGR gets blocked in the first place which can directly affect the performance of the vehicle, and can therefore be costly to fix.

Here at Sinspeed we are able to completely deactivate the EGR system on your Alfa Romeo. We provide a completely bespoke and custom EGR Delete service from start to finish. For further information or a quote, please call us today on 0203 815 9441.

What is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve?
An Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve often referred to as an EGR valve, is now mandatory on all new vehicles as it is designed to decrease your cars noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of harmful gases, before being released in to the atmosphere. This is done by recirculating a portion of the exhausts and running it through the combustion process again to ensure fuel is completely burned before being released, as the unburned fuel is thought to be a huge contributor to green house gas build up.

To learn more about what an EGR valve is, check out our highly informative EGR Valve Problems and Solutions article here.

What are the common problems associated with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve System?
Recirculating carbon rich gasses can eventually cause the carbon to build up and therefore interfere with the operation of the EGR valve. When the vehicle is also fitted with a turbocharger then problems become more evident due to wear and tear of the turbocharger, which can slowly leak oil if not maintained. As you can imagine, oil as well as carbon rich gasses being caught in the EGR valve can eventually cause it block quicker as it will also become sticky.

Some of the most common problems caused by a blocked EGR include:

Smoke on Acceleration
Fluttering On Acceleration
Loss of Power
Missfire
EGR Flap Position Sensor Faults

The list above highlights some of the more common faults, which are related to the EGR system on both Diesel and Petrol vehicles. We find that occasionally, it is possible to remove the EGR valve and just clean it but this is generally only a temporary fix, as the carbon continues to build up, and re cleaning the EGR will be required again at some point.

To completely replace the EGR Valve is also an option, however the price varies from as little as £200 and can sometimes be as much as £800 + Labour.

What are the expected effects after having my EGR de-activated?
You will find that by having the EGR removed and de-activated from the vehicle’s ECU, the engine will begin to work much more effectively, as all the air coming in to the engine will be clean causing the combustion of fuel / air to be more quicker and powerful. This will also cause less wear on the engine and other components allowing it to stay cleaner for longer.

How can SINSPEED help reduce this cost & what are the options?
We offer a safe and completely bespoke EGR Delete session whereby we de-activate the EGR system entirely from the vehicle. We simply log into the vehicles on-board engine management system via the ECU and switch off the EGR valve to stop it opening and recirculating the mucky exhaust gasses and clogging up your engine. Also, when this is done professionally via the ECU, there will be no logged fault codes, no warning lights and no loss of power – because the ECU will accept our de-activation code and not look to register anything further from the EGR system.

Below is a list of the most common vehicles that are affected by EGR problems:
