Four generations are on UK roads in numbers, and the electronics behind the dashboard changed at every break. The gearbox, the steering assistance, the anti-lock unit and the instrument cluster are different parts from one generation to the next, which is why a fault that is genuinely common on one Focus does not exist on another. The date of first registration on the V5C settles which one you have.
Focus Mk1 (1998 to 2004)
The shortest lamp list of the four, and the easiest to misread, because generic advice keeps offering it systems it was never built with. No particulate filter, no tyre-pressure monitoring, and stability control only on a minority. Steering is hydraulically assisted, so there is a fluid reservoir under the bonnet to check. The electronics story here is Ford’s Generic Electronic Module, the GEM, which runs lighting, wipers, indicators and central locking — when it misbehaves you get odd lighting and wiper behaviour rather than an engine lamp.
Focus Mk2 and the Mk2.5 facelift (2004 to 2011)
The volume generation on the used market, and the one that fills workshop benches. Its headline failure is the instrument cluster, which on these cars sits inside the immobiliser chain — so a cluster fault can present as a car that will not start with the theft light flashing, rather than as anything you would recognise as a dashboard problem. This is also the era of the Bosch 5.7-generation anti-lock and stability unit, and of the older TDCi diesels whose injection pumps carry their own control module. Steering is still hydraulic on most. One detail that matters later: every Mk2 was first used before 2012, which changes what an MOT tester is required to look at.
Focus Mk3 (2011 to 2018, facelifted 2014)
Where the PowerShift DPS6 automatic arrives, and where the amber spanner becomes the Focus’s signature warning. Steering assistance moves to an electric motor on the column, so there is no power steering fluid to check and no reservoir to find. Tyre-pressure monitoring, stop-start and the first of the driver-assistance lamps all appear here. Because these cars were first used from 2012 onwards, the airbag, tyre-pressure and steering warning lamps are now items an MOT tester checks — which they are not on a Mk2.
Focus Mk4 (2018 onwards)
A longer lamp list, and a good share of it belonging to cameras and radar rather than to the engine or the brakes. Higher trims carry a digital instrument panel that writes warnings in words alongside the icon, an electric parking brake is fitted to some versions, and the EcoBlue diesels with an SCR exhaust add AdBlue warnings. A Mk3 fault pattern should not be carried across to it: a Mk4 with the anti-lock and stability lamps lit needs its own codes read on their own merits.

Two things about this table before you use it. Ford Focus message centre warnings, and what the wording means
The Focus tells you more in words than in symbols, and the written half is the specific half. Wording varies with model year and with which display the car has, and some messages clear when you switch off — so cycle the message centre with the steering wheel or stalk controls and write down exactly what it says before you turn the key back. That sentence is worth more to a diagnostic technician than any description of the shape you saw.

Why the amber spanner on a Focus is a powertrain warning, not a service light
This is the one symbol where advice written for other makes actively misleads you. On a great many cars a spanner means a service is due. On a Ford it does not. The amber spanner is the powertrain fault indicator: it covers the transmission and driveline electronics, and on an automatic Focus it is the lamp a gearbox fault arrives with.
Two distinctions save real money here. The engine block outline is engine management and emissions; the spanner is powertrain, and they are separate systems reporting separately. And when a Focus wants a service it says so in words, with an oil change message in the display — it does not ask with this symbol. The PowerShift wrench light: what a DPS6 fault looks like from the driver’s seat
The PowerShift DPS6 is a six-speed automatic that uses two dry clutches rather than a torque converter, fitted to Focus and Fiesta from the Mk3 era. It behaves differently from a conventional automatic even when it is healthy, which is part of why faults get tolerated for so long before anyone investigates.

The pattern is recognisable. A shudder or judder as the car takes up drive from a standstill, a pause before the gearbox engages, harsh or delayed shifts, a transmission fault message, the spanner lit, limp mode holding a single gear — and at the far end, no drive at all. Treat that last one as a safety matter rather than an inconvenience: a car that cannot pull away in traffic, or that drops out of drive while moving, needs recovering rather than nursing home.
What matters diagnostically is that two very different causes produce a similar set of symptoms. Clutch wear is one. A fault in the transmission control module is the other, and that is an electronic unit rather than a mechanical rebuild — which is why having the codes read before anyone quotes for a gearbox is the difference between a repair and a replacement. The theft light: PATS, the spare key test, and a Focus that cranks but will not start
PATS is Ford’s Passive Anti-Theft System. A transponder in the head of the key is read by an antenna around the ignition lock, and if the car cannot authenticate it, fuelling and ignition are blocked. That is the whole mechanism, and knowing it turns a mystifying lamp into a short checklist.
Normal behaviour first: a slow flash with the ignition off means the system is armed and nothing is wrong. With the ignition on, the lamp should light briefly and then go out. Rapid flashing, or a lamp that stays lit after cranking, means the key was not recognised. The classic presentation is an engine that cranks strongly, fires for a moment and dies — or does not fire at all — while everything else on the car works perfectly.
Try the spare key before anything else. It costs nothing and it separates a failing key from a failing module in one attempt. If both keys behave the same way, the fault is in the car. When the Focus instrument cluster is the fault rather than the messenger
Check this one early, because a cluster that is misreporting makes every other lamp on this page untrustworthy. You are no longer diagnosing the car; you are diagnosing the thing describing the car to you.
- Gauges that drop to zero while you are driving, stick, or sweep on their own.
- A display that is dead, dim, or comes and goes with temperature.
- Missing segments, blank rows of pixels, or a mileage reading that flickers or shows dashes.
- Backlighting that has failed in patches, so part of the panel is readable and part is not.

The Focus warning lights that point at a failed electronic module
Most lamps on a Focus are a sensor, a fluid, a bulb or a service interval, and working through those first is the right order. A handful are different: they sit in front of a control unit with a recognised failure pattern on these cars, and no amount of checking levels will move them. The units below are a narrow slice of everything we repair, picked because these are the ones that announce themselves with a lamp on the dashboard rather than a noise or a leak.

ABS and stability control
The two systems share a hydraulic modulator and a control unit, so a fault in one commonly lights both, and it takes hill start assist with it. The question that matters is whether the fault is in a wheel speed sensor, which is a straightforward replacement, or inside the unit, which is not — and the codes answer it. Electric power steering
From the Mk3 the assistance comes from an electric motor on the steering column, so a steering lamp is never a fluid level and topping something up is not an option. Steering that is heavy from cold and normal once warm, assistance that fades in and out, or a wheel that goes heavy at one speed and not another all point at the electronics rather than the rack. The gearbox
On a PowerShift Focus the transmission control module is the electronic half of the problem and is repaired as a unit under transmission control module repairs. Ford’s earlier automated-manual arrangement, used elsewhere in the range, works differently: it drives an external clutch and gear actuator instead, which is a separate repair covered under clutch actuators. Confirming which gearbox you have before ordering anything is not a formality.
The instrument cluster and PATS
Covered in full above, and it belongs on this list because it is the one unit whose failure imitates every other fault on the car — including a starting problem that has nothing to do with the key.
The body control module
Lighting, wipers, indicators, central locking and the bulb monitoring behind them are handled by the body control module, called the Generic Electronic Module on earlier cars. A bulb failure warning that persists after a new bulb, indicators that flash at the wrong rate with nothing blown, wipers with a mind of their own or locking that works from one door and not another are its signature. The diesel injection pump control module
On the older Ford diesels the injection pump carries its own electronic control module, and when it fails you get non-starting, poor running or cutting out with an engine management lamp rather than anything that looks like a fuel problem. Both have too many possible causes to guess at, so the codes come first. What to do when a warning light comes on in your Focus

- Take the colour at face value. Red means find somewhere safe and stop. Amber means you have time to think, but not an unlimited amount of it.
- Read the message centre before you switch off. Cycle it with the steering wheel or stalk controls and write the wording down exactly. Some messages do not survive the ignition going off, and you will not get them back.
- Separate the spanner from the engine block. One is powertrain, the other is engine management. On a Focus this single distinction decides which half of the car you investigate.
- Do the checks that cost nothing. Handbrake fully off, fuel cap clicked shut, oil and coolant levels with the engine cold, all four tyre pressures, doors and boot properly latched, and a walk round for a dead bulb.
- Try the spare key if the theft light is involved. One attempt, no cost, and it rules out half the possible causes of a Focus that cranks and will not run.
- Have the codes read and recorded, and note which module reported them. A Ford will tell you whether the fault came from the PCM, the TCM, the ABS module, the instrument cluster, the steering module or the restraints module. That is half the diagnosis, and clearing the codes destroys it.
- Match the fault to the generation, not to the badge. A Focus problem described online is only useful once you know which Focus it was found on. This is where a correct diagnosis and an expensive guess part company.
Two rules hold throughout. Never attempt a do-it-yourself repair on the braking or restraint systems, and never clear a safety lamp simply to stop it bothering you. It depends on the age of the car, which is why the generation matters. Under the DVSA inspection manual the supplementary restraint system check applies to vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012, so a Mk3 or Mk4 Focus can be failed for an airbag warning lamp indicating a fault, while a Mk2 will not be. That is an MOT distinction and not a safety one. My Focus gauges dropped to zero and the display has gone dim. Is that the instrument cluster?
Almost certainly. Gauges that fall to zero while driving, stick or sweep on their own, a display that dims or comes and goes with temperature, missing segments, a mileage reading showing dashes, or several unrelated warning lamps lit with nothing behind them are all faults in the cluster rather than in whatever it appeared to be reporting. On a Focus there is a second clue: intermittent non-starting or the engine cutting out with the theft light flashing, because the cluster sits inside the immobiliser chain on the Mk2. Rule it in or out early, since a cluster that is misreporting makes every other lamp unreliable. Repairing your own unit keeps the mileage and the immobiliser pairing intact.

It means a powertrain fault has been stored and, in most cases, that the car has reduced engine power to protect itself. It is a genuine fault message rather than a service prompt, and it does not tell you the cause on its own — the stored codes do. Two symbols decide most Focus diagnoses, and both are read wrongly more often than they are read correctly. The amber spanner is a powertrain warning, not a service reminder, and on an automatic Focus it is usually the gearbox asking to be looked at rather than the engine.
