The Electric Power Steering Column in the Renault Megane has been known to fail and is one of the most queried repairs here at Sinspeed. It is most common on the Meganes from 2002 – 2009, and although the new Electric Power Steering system replaced the hydraulic system which was found fitted to earlier models, when faulty it can be a very expensive part to replace!

If you are finding that your steering has gone heavy in either one direction or both, this is generally a sign that your electric power steering column is failing. This usually starts as an intermittent failure where the steering light momentarily appears on the dash and then goes out itself. At this point, if the problem is not rectified, it can cause the power steering to fail completely in which case the steering light will remain permanently illuminated on the dashboard and the steering goes heavy in both directions with no power assistance.

If you take your vehicle to a local garage, they can confirm the fault codes by connecting diagnostic equipment to the OBD port, which will usually bring up the following 2 common faults:

C1606 – Motor driver malfunction

Ford Transit Propshaft Repairs

A Propeller Shaft which is commonly known as the Propshaft, runs along the underside of both Rear Wheel Drive and Four Wheel Drive cars, to deliver power from the engine / transmission system through to the Differential and onto the wheels. Ford Transits are generally rear wheel drives, therefore are equipped with both a propshaft as well as rear drive shafts.

What is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve?
An Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve often referred to as an EGR valve, is now mandatory on all new vehicles as it is designed to decrease your cars noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of harmful gases, before being released in to the atmosphere. This is done by recirculating a portion of the exhausts and running it through the combustion process again to ensure fuel is completely burned before being released, as the unburned fuel is thought to be a huge contributor to green house gas build up.

What are the common problems associated with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve System?
Recirculating carbon rich gasses can eventually cause the carbon to build up and therefore interfere with the operation of the EGR valve. When the vehicle is also fitted with a turbocharger then problems become more evident due to wear and tear of the turbocharger, which can slowly leak oil if not maintained. As you can imagine, oil as well as carbon rich gasses being caught in the EGR valve can eventually cause it block quicker as it will also become sticky.

Some of the most common problems caused by a blocked EGR include:

Smoke on Acceleration
Fluttering On Acceleration
Loss of Power
Missfire
EGR Flap Position Sensor Faults

The list above highlights some of the more common faults, which are related to the EGR system on both Diesel and Petrol vehicles. We find that occasionally, it is possible to remove the EGR valve and just clean it but this is generally only a temporary fix, as the carbon continues to build up, and re cleaning the EGR will be required again at some point.

To completely replace the EGR Valve is also an option, however the price varies from as little as £200 and can sometimes be as much as £800 + Labour.

What are the expected effects after having my EGR de-activated?
You will find that by having the EGR removed and de-activated from the vehicle’s ECU, the engine will begin to work much more effectively, as all the air coming in to the engine will be clean causing the combustion of fuel / air to be more quicker and powerful. This will also cause less wear on the engine and other components allowing it to stay cleaner for longer.

The Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump (PSG5) is fitted to both the Saab 9-3 as well as the Saab 9-5, and is know to be a very common failing part. Due to the Hybrid technology behind the design of the Bosch VP44 Diesel Pump we have found the unit will fail in very specific ways which will make the vehicle cut out and not start.

The most common fault of a failed EDC unit is the vehicle not starting, however other common faults also include:

These units are taken in on a daily basis for testing and repairs. Each unit is put through extensive tests on our latest diesel pump test rig, which allows us to communicate directly with the EDC unit to test all functions of the electronic diesel pump, and after repairing many of these failed units, we have concluded that there is a fault within the Electronic Diesel Control Unit (EDC) and not in the mechanical part of the diesel pump. By carrying out a soak test on all units we can identify not only the most common faults, but also highlight any intermittent faults.
